Southampton have been expelled from the Championship play-offs following the Spygate scandal, with Middlesbrough taking their place in the final against Hull City. The Saints have also received a four-point deduction for the start of next season.
EFL Statement on Sanctions
An Independent Disciplinary Commission ruled that Southampton admitted to multiple breaches of EFL regulations related to the unauthorised filming of other clubs' training sessions. The EFL statement confirmed: 'An Independent Disciplinary Commission has today expelled Southampton from the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs after the Club admitted to multiple breaches of EFL Regulations related to the unauthorised filming of other Clubs’ training.'
In addition to the expulsion, Southampton received a four-point deduction to be applied to the 2026/27 Championship table, along with a reprimand for all charges. The effect of the order is that Middlesbrough are reinstated into the play-offs and will face Hull City in the final, scheduled for Saturday 23 May.
Details of the Breaches
Southampton were first charged on 8 May, with further charges issued on 17 May for additional breaches during the 2025/26 season. The admitted breaches concern fixtures against Oxford United in December 2025, Ipswich Town in April 2026, and Middlesbrough in May 2026. The club admitted to violating regulations requiring clubs to act with utmost good faith and prohibiting the observation of another club's training session within 72 hours of a scheduled match.
Potential Appeal
Southampton have the right to appeal the decision, and parties are working to resolve any appeal by 20 May. Depending on the outcome, the final fixture could change again. The EFL is in discussions with all three clubs regarding the implications and will make a further announcement in due course.
