South Africa defeated Scotland 42-28 in a thrilling Nations Championship match at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, with the Springboks scoring six tries to Scotland's four. The hosts dominated the middle of each half, scoring five tries in those periods, while Scotland scored two tries in both the second and fourth quarters to earn a bonus point.
Springboks' Power Proves Decisive
South Africa broke the game open after 15 minutes with two tries in as many minutes. Embrose Papier opened the scoring with a brilliant solo try, beating two forwards and rounding Kyle Rowe after Finn Russell's short goalline drop-out. Moments later, Boan Venter showed extraordinary strength to lift Cobus Wiese in the air and hurl him forward, setting up a charge that led to Evan Roos driving over from close range for a 14-0 lead.
Scotland regrouped and struck twice before half-time. Pierre Schoeman won a scrum penalty, and Matt Fagerson drove over from close range. On the stroke of half-time, Russell collected a loose ball, fed Sione Tuipulotu on the switch, and his off-load put Rowe over to level the score at 14-14.
Second-Half Surge
Scotland kept the pressure on after the break, especially when Ben-Jason Dixon was yellow-carded for a clash of heads with Scott Cummings. However, South Africa broke the game open again with three tries around the hour mark. Elrigh Louw drove over from close range, Damian Willemse combined with Grant Williams for the next, and Zac Porthren added another from close range to make it 35-14 with 15 minutes left.
Scotland responded with two tries of their own. Lock forward Scott Cummings went through a hole in midfield and linked with Josh Bayliss, who ran home to the posts. Ben White then broke from a ruck to score, securing a bonus point. However, Jesse Kriel rounded off the scoring with a try in the final minutes, gathering Handré Pollard's chip ahead to make the final score 42-28.
