Sony Developing Until Dawn Style Horror Shooter for PS6, Rumour Suggests
Sony Developing Horror Shooter for PS6, Rumour Says

A new rumour has emerged suggesting that a PlayStation studio is developing a horror shooter for the upcoming PlayStation 6 console, potentially tied to a previously rumoured Until Dawn sequel. While Sony has yet to announce an official release date for the PS6, early speculation points to a 2027 launch. In preparation, Sony is reportedly working on several titles to showcase the next-generation hardware.

Details of the Alleged Project

According to a report from MP1st, Sony has partnered with an unnamed studio to create a next-generation game featuring immersive third-person horror shooter mechanics, built using Unreal Engine 5. The source suggests that the game may not be a pure shooter but incorporates these elements as part of a broader experience. Additionally, the project is said to utilise motion performance capture and include a player progression system.

Connection to Firesprite

The report hints that this project could be linked to Firesprite, the studio behind Horizon Call of the Mountain, which Sony acquired in 2021. Firesprite has been rumoured to be working on a title codenamed Project Heartbreak, believed by some to be an Until Dawn sequel. After the cancellation of Firesprite's Twisted Metal game in 2024, the status of Project Heartbreak was uncertain. However, MP1st claims the project was still in development as of late last year.

Until Dawn Sequel Evidence

Evidence supporting an Until Dawn sequel has grown, particularly after the remake of the original game added a new ending. However, it remains unclear if Firesprite is the developer. The original Until Dawn was created by Supermassive Games, another British studio, which is set to release a new horror title, Directive 8020, this month.

Prior rumours have also linked Firesprite to a new Forbidden Siren game, a lesser-known PlayStation 2 horror franchise originally from Japan Studio. The British connection makes the Until Dawn 2 rumour seem more plausible, but the horror shooter description could fit Forbidden Siren as well. Alternatively, this project may be entirely unrelated to Firesprite.

Other Sony Developments

Beyond this rumour, Sony's other studios are busy with upcoming titles. Insomniac Games is set to launch Marvel's Wolverine later this year. Santa Monica Studio is reportedly working on a new game set within the God of War universe, while Sony Bend has been hiring for a AAA console title.

As with all rumours, this information should be taken with caution until official confirmation from Sony. The gaming community eagerly awaits more details as the PS6 launch approaches.
