Socceroo Herrington's dream Hull debut stuns Man United

Lucas Herrington, the 18-year-old Socceroos defender, made a dream Premier League debut as Hull City secured a stunning 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Saturday. Coming on as a second-half substitute, Herrington helped protect Hull's two-goal lead, marking the club's first league win over United in 52 years.

Herrington's Impactful Debut

Herrington, the only Australian in England's top flight, entered the match in the 64th minute after central defender Nobel Mendy was forced off with an injury. Despite United's late pressure, the lanky Queenslander remained composed, making nine touches and helping secure a clean sheet.

“Just buzzing. I’ve been watching the Premier League since I was five years old, waking up at all hours of the morning,” Herrington told Hull City's club media. “So to be out there with some of these lads against Manchester United nonetheless was a great moment for me and something I’ll never forget.”

Hull's Historic Victory

Hull City, written off as overwhelming relegation favourites, took the lead in the 17th minute when Semi Ajayi scored from a corner. Regan Slater then whipped in a free-kick that Mendy headed home in the 38th minute, inspiring chants of “Are you watching, Joe Cole?” – a response to former England player Joe Cole's claim that “Hull are gone, man.”

United, managed by Michael Carrick, struggled throughout, with their build-up play and attack described as too pedestrian. The loss was United's first ever Premier League defeat to Hull, whose return to the top flight after nine years sparked ecstatic scenes among fans and owner Acun Ilicali.

Next Steps for Herrington and Hull

Hull's coach Sergej Jakirovic revealed that Ajayi, Mendy, and captain Lewis Coyle will all be assessed for injuries over the next 24 hours. Herrington is in line to feature in Tuesday's League Cup tie against Championship side Stoke.

Herrington, whose mother and agent watched from the stands, added: “Obviously a Premier League debut, a win, clean sheet against Manchester United. It doesn’t get much better than that. Just hearing the fans so happy, singing their songs and the boys putting in 100%. It was just a great event to be a part of and it’s just the start of something special here.”
