Former Manchester United and Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre has narrowed the Premier League title race to just three teams, insisting that Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool are the only realistic contenders for the 2026-27 season. The Frenchman, who won four Premier League titles with Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, believes it will be 'tough' for Mikel Arteta's side to defend their crown, with the Gunners having ended their 22-year wait for the title last season by finishing seven points clear of Manchester City.
Arsenal's Title Defence Under Scrutiny
Arsenal secured their first Premier League title since the 2003-04 'Invincibles' campaign, amassing a seven-point gap over Manchester City. However, Silvestre warns that retaining the title presents a unique challenge, as the Gunners must now cope with the pressure of being champions while fending off renewed challenges from their rivals.
'It might seem like an easy job but you have to manage all the egos and keep everybody happy,' Silvestre told Grosvenor Sport. 'The players should understand that there is no rest. You must keep improving the team and the squad.'
Silvestre praised Arteta's managerial credentials, stating: 'Mikel Arteta has already shown that he can compete with the very best. Right now he's the best manager in the Premier League based on last season. The challenge now is to remain in that position as number one and that's tough in the Premier League.'
Manchester City and Liverpool: The Only Realistic Challengers
While acknowledging the strength of Arsenal, Silvestre was unequivocal about the other contenders: 'There will be so much competition from Manchester City and Liverpool this season although at the moment they are the only two teams that are ready to compete for the title, realistically.'
Manchester City, under new manager Enzo Maresca, face the daunting task of replacing legendary boss Pep Guardiola, who departed after a decade of dominance. Liverpool, who finished 25 points adrift of Arsenal last season despite significant summer investment, sacked Arne Slot and will be looking to bounce back under new leadership.
Manchester United's Ambitions: Evra's Perspective
Silvestre's former Manchester United teammate Patrice Evra also weighed in on the title race, urging the Red Devils to aim higher than a top-four finish. Evra, speaking to Stake, emphasized the club's winning DNA: 'Manchester United should never believe they are too far away. This club was not built to accept second place. But belief without action is just talking.'
Evra praised the work of manager Michael Carrick, who replaced Ruben Amorim mid-season and guided United to a third-place finish. 'I like what Michael Carrick is doing. He knows Manchester United because he lived it. He knows the standards, the history and what that dressing room should feel like,' Evra said.
'When you are Manchester United, you don't start the season dreaming about finishing fourth. Come on. That is not the standard Sir Alex Ferguson built into the club. Of course you have to be realistic because the Premier League is tough. But the ambition has to be trophies. If top-four becomes the dream, then we have a problem.'
United's Rebuild and the Road Ahead
Evra expressed confidence in United's ability to compete, provided the club stays united behind Carrick. 'Michael is calm, intelligent and respected. If the club stays behind him and the players buy into his ideas, United can compete with anyone,' he added.
The 2026-27 Premier League season kicks off on August 21, with champions Arsenal hosting newly-promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners will be eager to prove Silvestre wrong and maintain their status as the team to beat, while City and Liverpool will be determined to close the gap.
