Shaun Murphy Warns UK Snooker Hopefuls: Chinese Rivals Outwork You
Shaun Murphy: UK Snooker Must Match Chinese Work Rate

Shaun Murphy has issued a stark warning to UK snooker hopefuls, urging them to raise their work rate to keep pace with the accelerating rise of Chinese players. Wu Yize became the second world champion from China on Monday night, defeating Murphy 18-17 in a thrilling Crucible final. This follows Zhao Xintong's victory in 2025, marking back-to-back Chinese winners.

Chinese Dominance in Numbers

At the 2026 World Championship, 11 of the 32 players were Chinese, and five of the world's top 16 hail from the country. Emerging talents like Chang Bingyu (23), Jiang Jun (20), and Lan Yuhao (17) are climbing the rankings, while Wang Xinbo (18) is poised to make an impact. The only three members of the top 16 under 30 are all Chinese, suggesting future dominance.

Murphy's Challenge to British Players

Murphy emphasized the dedication of Chinese players, citing Wu Yize's move to Sheffield as a teenager, sharing a bed with his father in a windowless room. 'Talent does nothing without hard work,' Murphy said. 'British players need to realize if they think they're working hard, they're probably not.'

Despite positive signs from European newcomers like Liam Pullen, Stan Moody, and Antoni Kowalski, Murphy highlighted the disparity in investment. 'The Chinese government has invested heavily in snooker for 10-15 years, and we see the results. It would be lovely to see that mirrored in the UK.'

Strength in Depth

WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson noted that Chinese schools have up to 30 tables, making the sport accessible to many. Murphy added, 'A wonder kid pops up, but now there are 20 or 30 of them. The strength in depth on tour is the best it's ever been.' With 15 different ranking event winners in the 2025/26 season, Murphy believes individual dominance is unlikely.
