Senegal secure stunning victory over Norway
Senegal defeated Norway 2-1 on Tuesday in their final Group I match, securing top spot in the group and advancing to the knockout stage of the World Cup. The victory, played at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, saw Senegal come from behind after Norway took an early lead.
Norway strike first through Haaland
Norway opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Erling Haaland latched onto a through ball from Martin Ødegaard and slotted past Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The goal, Haaland's fifth of the tournament, put Norway ahead and gave them hope of advancing.
Senegal responded well, however, and began to dominate possession as the first half progressed. Their equalizer came in the 38th minute when Krépin Diatta fired a low shot from outside the box that beat Norwegian keeper Ørjan Nyland.
Gueye scores winner after halftime
The second half saw Senegal continue their pressure, and they took the lead in the 63rd minute through Idrissa Gueye. The midfielder struck a powerful volley from a corner that deflected off a Norwegian defender and into the net. Norway pushed for an equalizer but were unable to break down a resolute Senegal defense.
According to FIFA statistics, Senegal had 58% possession and 12 shots on goal compared to Norway's 8. The win puts Senegal atop Group I with 7 points, while Norway finish third with 4 points and are eliminated.
Impact on the tournament
Senegal's victory sends them through to the round of 16, where they will face the runner-up of Group F. Norway, meanwhile, will return home after failing to advance from the group stage for the first time since 1998.
Senegal coach Aliou Cissé praised his team's resilience: "We showed great character to come back from a goal down. The players believed in themselves and executed the game plan perfectly. This is a historic moment for Senegalese football."
