George Russell snatched a dramatic pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix after Max Verstappen crashed in the final seconds of qualifying, bringing out yellow flags that threatened to ruin Russell's lap. The Mercedes driver held his nerve, lifting off under the yellows before powering to a time 0.236 seconds faster than Charles Leclerc's Ferrari.
Chaotic final moments
With seconds remaining, Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull at turn nine, skidding through the gravel and into the wall. Single yellow flags were waved immediately as Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton completed their laps. Russell, following Verstappen, lifted off as required but maintained enough speed to cross the line for pole. The stewards reviewed the incident but took no further action, confirming the flags were single yellow, not double yellow which would have forced an abort.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed Russell made a 100-meter lift, costing him about a tenth and a half. "A clinically executed piece of decision-making under immense pressure," Wolff said.
Russell's confidence
Russell expressed satisfaction with the lap and his judgment. "Yeah, 100%, I just need to get that click," he said. "As I found again today, as I had in Barcelona, as I had in Canada, as I had in Melbourne, as I showed in China, and then the results will come at some point. It can't continuously be bad luck over the season."
The pole is Russell's fourth of the season, keeping Mercedes unbeaten in qualifying. He leads the championship by 41 points from Hamilton and is 50 ahead of his teammate Kimi Antonelli, who finished fourth after aborting his final lap due to perceived double yellow flags.
Grid and race outlook
Hamilton qualified third, while Verstappen will start fifth after his crash time stood. The McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are sixth and seventh. Ferrari, despite taking the win in Spain, were outqualified by Mercedes, who appear to have the pace advantage. Russell will face pressure from the fast-starting Ferraris and his teammate Antonelli, who has won five of seven races this season.
