Casualty spoilers for Saturday's (June 27) episode, now available on BBC iPlayer, reveal the verdict for Stevie Nash (Elinor Lawless) after a complaint was made against her. The senior consultant faced judgement day in Flynn Byron's (Olly Rix) office, fearing for her future at Holby ED following a report from former friend Dylan Keogh (William Beck).
Background of the complaint
Dylan reported Stevie to Clinical Lead Flynn after uncovering her secret relationship with his son, Matty Linlaker (Aron Julius). Stevie had been conducting a secret relationship with Matty following Kim Chang's (Jasmine Bayes) tragic death. When Matty admitted he was falling for her, Stevie ended the fling via text. Matty, devastated, confided in Dylan, who was horrified to learn not only of the sexual relationship but also that Matty had covered for Stevie when she unknowingly overdosed a child.
Despite Matty's insistence on handling it himself, Dylan reported Stevie to Flynn, who confirmed an investigation under suspicion of sexual coercion. The news horrified both Stevie and Matty, who adamantly denied any coercion. Dylan told the HR board he believed Stevie should not continue working at Holby ED, while Matty fought for her.
The verdict and its aftermath
After saving a patient's life last week, Stevie faced the board with confidence, apologizing but arguing she deserved to keep her job. This week, she was summoned to Flynn's office with Dylan and Matty. Flynn announced: 'The medical director has decided that on this occasion he will keep this on an informal basis and will not investigate any further.' Stevie will undergo a period of 'guided practice' under Flynn's supervision and must stay out of resus for now. Matty will be buddied with Rash Masum (Neet Mohan).
The verdict angered Dylan, who felt the punishment for endangering a life and covering it up should have been stronger. The trio struggled to move forward, with Dylan feeling betrayed by Stevie, and Stevie similarly feeling betrayed by Dylan for trying to end her career. Matty remained appalled that Dylan ignored his wishes and reported Stevie.
Dylan's shocking relapse
The stress took its toll on Dylan, who had to deliver a keynote speech at a dinner that evening. Given the animosity, he expected to attend alone. However, Stevie urged Matty to make things right with his father, despite her own feelings of betrayal. Matty took her advice and arrived in time to see Dylan's speech. To his shock, recovering alcoholic Dylan grabbed a glass of champagne.
Discussing Matty's feelings, actor Aron Julius said: 'I think Matty attaches Dylan's alcoholism to his mum's pain, and his mum not being able to achieve the things she wanted to achieve. I think at first there is a defensiveness to it, and there is a view of this is the problem, you're the problem.' Julius added: 'I think it deepens Matty's understanding of what it means to have that addiction. At first it is a defensive thing of, "my Mum was right", but I think as the story goes on, there is more of an understanding, and empathy, and a sympathy.'
