Wayne Rooney has predicted that Arsenal are the clear favourites to win the Premier League title and could potentially 'run away' with the race, while also forecasting that Manchester United will secure a top-four finish, likely in fourth place. Rooney made these comments ahead of the new season, which sees Arsenal begin their title defence against newly-promoted Coventry City on Friday night.
Arsenal ended a 22-year wait for an English championship last season, and their squad has been further strengthened with the summer signings of Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis. Mikel Arteta's side also remain interested in adding a new centre-back and another striker to their ranks. The Gunners demonstrated their form by not only beating Manchester City in Sunday's Community Shield but also dominating Enzo Maresca's side in a statement victory.
Rooney's Premier League Predictions
Speaking on the 'Stick to United' platform, Rooney, a five-time Premier League winner with Manchester United, shared his thoughts on the upcoming title race. He highlighted the uncertainty surrounding several top clubs, including Manchester City, who are adjusting to life without legendary manager Pep Guardiola, and Liverpool, who have appointed Andoni Iraola following Arne Slot's sacking.
'I would take top-four. I think maybe fourth, I still think need to get two of three more players in,' Rooney said. 'You're looking at Arsenal and Man City – Chelsea will be a lot better this season, Tottenham will be better. You've got Liverpool in there as well. So it's going to be tough.'
Rooney elaborated on Arsenal's potential: 'Arsenal have the potential to run away with it but behind them we could see a lot of changes. I think Man United will finish fourth.' He also acknowledged Michael Carrick's achievement in guiding United back into the Champions League, emphasizing the need for the club to maintain that standing.
Manchester United's Top-Four Hopes
Rooney cautioned that expecting a Premier League title win this season is unrealistic for Manchester United. 'I think it's unrealistic to think they're going to win the Premier League this year, I don't think they will,' he stated. He stressed the importance of United staying close to Arsenal, who he believes will improve further with their new signings.
'This period is so important for United to stay close enough to Arsenal who are the champions and will be even better this season, I think, with the players they've brought in,' Rooney added. He also noted the unpredictable nature of the season: 'We don't know how Man City will do without Pep Guardiola or how Liverpool will get on but I think they will be better and Chelsea will definitely be better as well as Tottenham.'
Season Outlook
Rooney concluded that the season will be more challenging, with United needing to remain competitive in the top-four race. 'So I think this season will be more difficult and United need to make sure they stay around the top-four and stay competitive,' he said. He posed a question about United's potential to challenge: 'I think Arsenal are the favourites to win it but can United nick second off Man City and start to build again and maybe challenge for the title next season?'
Manchester United are set to face Hull City in their Premier League opener on Saturday, while Arsenal will host Coventry City in their first match of the title defence. The coming weeks will reveal whether Rooney's predictions hold true as the season unfolds.
