Thousands of Cristiano Ronaldo supporters swarmed Funchal Cathedral on Saturday, mistakenly believing the football star was marrying Georgina Rodriguez in Madeira. The bride, Fatima Nicole Cunha Teixeira, was mobbed as she arrived in a grey Rolls-Royce, with fans trying to catch a glimpse of who they thought was Georgina. The wedding was actually for Fabio Ramos and Fatima Nicole Cunha Teixeira, a couple from France with no connection to Ronaldo.
Chaos Outside Cathedral
Father Marcos Goncalves, the parish priest who married the couple, confirmed the mix-up: 'I can tell you that they are nothing to do with Cristiano Ronaldo. This is the only wedding taking place here today.' The crowd, estimated in the thousands, had gathered after rumours spread that Ronaldo would marry Georgina in Madeira this weekend.
The couple's wedding party was caught off guard. One member said: 'Fabio is not Cristiano Ronaldo. This is all crazy. We did not expect anything like this. I don't think he is going to forget his wedding.' As the Rolls-Royce approached, fans swarmed the car, prompting a wedding guest to shout: 'This is not Georgina!'
Ronaldo's Reaction
Ronaldo, 41, responded to the chaos with humour. He reacted to Jornal da Madeira's post of the crowds outside the cathedral with several laughing face emojis. His older sister, Elma Aveiro, also commented on social media: 'But why do these people think Ronaldo would get married, when he himself never announced it, anyway? Don't they realise that the media doesn't know anything, they just want to know?! And then they invent things. Surreal.'
Thousands also gathered outside the Savoy Palace, a luxury five-star hotel in Funchal, after rumours suggested it would host the wedding party. The speculation was fuelled by Ronaldo's previous comments about marrying Georgina.
Wedding Plans Still Unconfirmed
In an interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo had said he and Georgina planned to marry after the World Cup. 'I hope to arrive at my wedding with the champion's trophy,' he said. 'I'm going to marry her because I believe it's the right time. Not just because she's the mother of my children but because she's the person I love most.'
However, his sister Katia Aveiro told TV 7 Dias last month that no date had been set for 2026. 'There's no set date,' she said. 'This year I won't be wearing a wedding dress, neither for myself nor for him.' Ronaldo made his sixth World Cup appearance this summer, but Portugal were knocked out by eventual winners Spain in the last 16.
