Former Olympic Cyclist Rohan Dennis Faces Social Media Backlash After Porsche Post
Former Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis has ignited a firestorm of criticism on social media after posting a photo of a black Porsche with the caption "What an absolute weapon." This controversial move comes just 10 months after he received a 17-month suspended sentence for an incident where his car fatally struck his wife, fellow Olympic cyclist Melissa Hoskins, near their home in Medindie, Adelaide, in December 2023.
Details of the Tragic Incident and Legal Outcome
Melissa Hoskins, a celebrated world and Olympic cyclist, died after being struck by the vehicle driven by her husband. Dennis pleaded guilty to committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm but was not held criminally responsible for her death. In May of last year, Judge Ian Press sentenced Dennis to a $100, two-year good behavior bond and suspended his driver's license for five years. The judge noted that Dennis was not charged with causing Hoskins' death, as she had jumped onto the bonnet of the car, and driving under such circumstances was deemed inherently dangerous.
Social Media Activity Draws Sharp Criticism
Dennis, who had been inactive on social media since shortly before the crash, returned to Instagram this week. His post featuring the Porsche, accompanied by the song "Fancy $hit" by CID and Taylr Renee, was met with immediate backlash. Sarah Quick, South Australia's commissioner for victims' rights, labeled the post "deeply offensive" and stated it showed "a clear lack of insight into the real and lasting impact of the harm he has caused." She added that it reflected "a profound lack of respect for Melissa and her family."
Further Posts and Account Deletion
Following the initial post, Dennis shared an image of his two children riding bikes with the caption "Two absolute weapons" and a love heart emoji. He also posted a screenshot of a transcribed voice message from an Adelaide Advertiser journalist, along with the words "Didn't take these rats long," and a video of reporters outside his Adelaide home. By Thursday, Dennis appeared to have deleted his entire Instagram account, though he was contacted for comment on the matter.
Background on the Athletes' Careers
Both Dennis and Hoskins had distinguished cycling careers. Dennis won two world titles in the road time trial, along with a silver medal in the team pursuit at the 2012 Olympics and a bronze in the road time trial at the Tokyo Olympics. Hoskins competed in the team pursuit at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and was part of the squad that secured the 2015 world championship title. The incident has cast a shadow over their legacies, with the recent social media activity adding to the ongoing public scrutiny.
