Marcus Rashford is in negotiations over a permanent £40 million transfer to Turkish club Fenerbahce, according to reports, after his proposed move to Barcelona fell through. The 28-year-old England forward, who spent last season on loan at the Nou Camp, is now searching for a new club after Manchester United made it clear he will not be reintegrated into Michael Carrick’s squad.
Rashford’s Barcelona Loan and the Collapsed Move
Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan in the summer of 2025, hoping to secure a permanent switch. His performances were largely impressive, as he scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists in La Liga, helping the Catalan giants retain their league title and reach the latter stages of the Champions League. Barcelona boss Hansi Flick appeared keen to keep Rashford, but a permanent deal proved difficult after the club spent £70 million to sign England teammate Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.
With Barcelona unable to finance a permanent transfer, Rashford is due to return to Old Trafford following a break after his World Cup commitments with England. Earlier in the summer, several Manchester United legends had recommended Rashford to Arsenal. Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand, and David Seaman all voiced support for a move to the Emirates Stadium. Ferdinand said: ‘I would take Rashford. For £40m, I’m sweeping Rashford off his feet.’ Scholes added: ‘That would be a great move, a great move for both parties. I think Arsenal would be a great move for him and the club.’
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is interested in adding a new winger, but his priority remains Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior. The Gunners have reportedly made an approach for the Brazilian, which has complicated any potential Rashford deal.
Flick and Rashford’s Farewell
Barcelona boss Hansi Flick expressed regret over the club’s inability to sign Rashford permanently. ‘You don’t know what happens with players who are on loan – our situation is not easy for that,’ Flick said last week. ‘I appreciate working with him.
