PWHL Shatters US Women's Hockey Attendance Record at Madison Square Garden
The Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) achieved a historic milestone on Saturday night as the New York Sirens hosted the Seattle Torrent at Madison Square Garden. A sold-out crowd of 18,006 spectators electrified the iconic venue, setting a new US attendance record for women's hockey. This event marked the Sirens' debut at the Garden, culminating in a thrilling 2-1 shootout victory for New York.
Star-Studded Ceremonies and Fan Engagement
Billie Jean King, a PWHL advisory board member and investor, performed the ceremonial puck drop, joined by business partner and former tennis star Ilana Kloss, LSU basketball standout Flau'jae Johnson, Torrent forward Hilary Knight, and Sirens defender Micah Zandee-Hart. Broadway star Jenn Colella performed the US national anthem, while eight-division boxing champion Amanda Serrano announced the Sirens' lineup, with US women's soccer great Kelley O'Hara doing the same for Seattle.
Fans queued along the concourses to receive commemorative certificates for their first Sirens game, and Madison Packer, a founding member of the now-defunct National Women's Hockey League, signed jerseys for young supporters. The atmosphere was further enhanced by handcrafted light-up Sirens helmets and homemade friendship bracelets distributed by enthusiastic attendees.
Game Highlights and Player Performances
New York forward Sarah Fillier scored the equalizing goal late in regulation, pressuring Seattle's Emily Brown, while goaltender Kayle Osborne sealed the win with a 20-save performance, including denying a penalty shot and stopping four of five shootout attempts. Seattle coach Steve O'Rourke expressed pride in the league's rapid growth, stating, 'I'm just happy and proud, regardless of the result, to be a part of this... to see how quickly it has grown and been supported across the country.'
The Sirens' signature chant, 'Wee-woo! Wee-woo!', filled the arena throughout the game, creating an intense yet wholesome atmosphere. Young female hockey players joined professionals on the ice during the opening ceremony, adding an inspirational touch to the event.
League Momentum and Playoff Implications
This game marked the PWHL's eighth new US attendance record since January 2024 and the fourth this season, all featuring Seattle or New York. With the third PWHL Walter Cup playoffs approaching, Boston, Montreal, and Minnesota have secured three of four spots, leaving five other teams, including New York, battling for the final berth. The Sirens are closing in on a playoff position, sitting just two points behind Ottawa and three behind Toronto with five games remaining.
New York goaltender Kayle Osborne reflected on the record crowd, saying, 'It means the world; like you just can't put it into words to have all those people show up for us tonight and show their support for not only the Sirens, but women's hockey.' The momentum around women's hockey continues to build, showcasing the league's expanding footprint and dedicated fanbase.
