Preston Forward Banned for Nine Matches in Racism Row

The Football Association has handed Milutin Osmajic a significant nine-match suspension after an independent regulatory commission found allegations of racial abuse against Burnley's Hannibal Mejbri to be proven. The incident occurred during a heated Championship derby between the two Lancashire clubs at Deepdale in February 2025.

Club Expresses Disappointment at FA Verdict

Preston North End has publicly criticised the decision, stating they are "extremely disappointed" with the outcome. In an official club statement, they highlighted that the ruling was determined on the 'Balance of Probabilities' standard of proof rather than 'Beyond Reasonable Doubt'.

The club emphasised their continued support for the Montenegrin international, who has maintained his innocence throughout the process. Preston also noted that the FA determined the decision "offers no moral judgement, was not premeditated nor any comment about his general character."

Substantial Punishment Imposed

Beyond the immediate nine-match ban, the 26-year-old forward has been fined £21,000 and must complete a mandatory education course. The FA brought the charge under Rule E3, describing it as an "aggravated breach" due to the alleged words including a reference to "colour and/or race."

Osmajic, who joined Preston from Spanish side Cádiz in September 2023, has scored four goals in 11 league appearances this season. His absence will be a significant blow to Preston's attacking options during his suspension period.

The regulatory commission is expected to publish its full written reasons for the decision in due course, providing further insight into the evidence considered during the proceedings.
