Tragedy Strikes at Peruvian Football Stadium During Pre-Match Event
One person has been killed and dozens more injured in a devastating incident at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium in Lima, Peru. The tragedy occurred during a pre-match flag-waving event on Friday, just one day before a highly anticipated derby match between home team Alianza Lima and local rivals Universitario de Deportes.
Emergency Response and Conflicting Reports
Forty firefighters responded to the emergency at the ground, where initial reports suggested parts of the stadium's wall had collapsed. However, both Alianza Lima and fire officials have since denied any structural failures at the venue.
"There are no collapsed walls or sections fallen into the pit," stated fire chief Marcos Pajuelo in an interview with Canal N. "There hasn't been any debris." The interior ministry had earlier described the incident as "involving people trapped in a structure."
Official Casualty Figures and Investigation
Peruvian Health Minister Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero confirmed the single fatality and reported that 47 people had been injured, with three individuals in critical condition. Media reports had initially suggested as many as 60 people were injured in the incident.
Alianza Lima has offered condolences to the victims and their families while pledging full cooperation with authorities. "We are fully and transparently collaborating with the competent authorities," the club stated on X, promising "total transparency" in the investigation into what caused the tragedy.
Match Proceeds Amid Safety Concerns
Despite the tragic events, the Peruvian professional soccer league announced that Saturday's derby match would proceed as planned. The league emphasized its "commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all" at sporting events and pledged to "continue to work closely with the clubs and authorities to promote safe environments both inside and outside the stadiums."
Stadium History and Modernization Challenges
The Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, popularly known as Matute, was constructed in the 1970s and is located in the Matute neighborhood of Lima's La Victoria district. With a current capacity of more than 33,900 seats, the stadium has seen limited modernization over the decades.
According to The Stadium Guide, the venue has remained a "fairly basic ground" since its construction. In 2010, wooden benches were replaced with plastic seats, and Alianza Lima had reportedly been exploring ways to upgrade the facility, including increasing capacity to 40,000 spectators and potentially building a new arena capable of holding 60,000 fans.
As relatives gathered at the stadium entrance awaiting news about their loved ones, authorities continued their investigation into the exact cause of the incident that has left the Peruvian football community in mourning.
