Martin Odegaard's second-half strike proved decisive as Arsenal came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium, maintaining their perfect start to the Premier League season with three wins from three.
Chelsea took a shock lead after just 77 seconds when Morgan Rogers volleyed home from the edge of the area. The goal was Arsenal's first conceded this season and carried added narrative weight, as Rogers had been chased by Arsenal during the summer before joining Chelsea for £117m.
Arsenal's ferocious response
Arsenal's reaction was immediate and intense. The home side dominated possession and created a staggering number of openings before Kai Havertz equalised on 25 minutes. The German forward was allowed to drift along the edge of the Chelsea area from right to left before his low shot beat Emiliano Martínez inside the near post.
The equaliser came after a period of sustained pressure. Odegaard's winner
Arsenal took the lead shortly after half-time through Odegaard, who started and finished the move. The goal was created by a stunning feint from Havertz, who froze defender Wesley Fofana when Christos Tzolis sent over a low ball from the left, leaving Odegaard with the freedom of the Chelsea area to finish.
Chelsea pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, with substitute Estêvão forcing a fine save from David Raya on 89 minutes with a drive from the edge of the area. However, Arsenal held on to secure the win, continuing their dominance over their cross-town rivals, having not lost to Chelsea in eleven previous meetings in all competitions.
Rogers' early strike
The match began with a significant blow for Arsenal when Rogers, who had been the subject of an £80m bid from Arsenal before Chelsea's higher offer, capitalised on a defensive lapse. After a Reece James free-kick was not cleared, Jorrel Hato outjumped Odegaard, and the ball broke for Rogers to thread a volley into the bottom corner.
Despite the early setback, Arsenal's confidence shone through. The home crowd created a raucous atmosphere, and the team's intensity and physical levels were evident throughout. Chelsea, under Xabi Alonso, had been free-scoring in their opening matches against Fulham and Brighton, but they struggled to contain Arsenal's relentless pressure.
