Nice's Moffi and Boga on Sick Leave After Fan Attack at Training Ground
Nice players on sick leave after fan attack

Two OGC Nice footballers have been placed on medical leave following a shocking confrontation with the club's own supporters at their training ground. The incident occurred after the team returned from a disappointing defeat.

Players Targeted After Sixth Consecutive Loss

The attack unfolded on Sunday night when an estimated 400 fans gathered outside the club's training centre. The supporters were furious after Nice suffered their sixth consecutive loss in all competitions, a 3-1 defeat away to Lorient.

As the team bus arrived, the situation escalated. Two fans are understood to have boarded the vehicle to confront the players. When striker Terem Moffi and winger Jérémie Boga eventually alighted, they were subjected to a torrent of abuse.

Verbal and Physical Assault Detailed

Reports from France indicate the players were spat on, punched, kicked, and subjected to racist abuse. The club's sporting director, Florian Maurice, was also targeted in the disturbing scenes.

As a direct result, Nice's medical staff have signed off both players. Nigerian international Moffi has been given a week's leave, meaning he will miss next Sunday's home Ligue 1 fixture against Angers. Former Chelsea player Boga has been granted five days' leave but could return if deemed fit.

The club has stated that the players are not only dealing with potential physical injuries but are also psychologically shaken by the ordeal.

Official Condemnation and Legal Action

The French professional football league (LFP) issued a strong statement on Tuesday condemning the attacks. It described the assaults as "totally unacceptable" and said they "undermine the integrity of the players and the values of football."

The LFP announced it will join as a civil party in any legal complaints filed by the players, pledging full support to ensure the facts are uncovered. OGC Nice will await a police report before deciding on their formal response, which could include pressing charges against the perpetrators.

Security will be heightened for the upcoming match against Angers, a fixture not typically associated with such flashpoints.

The incident casts a dark shadow over a club already struggling on the pitch. Owned by British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Nice sit 10th in Ligue 1 and are the only team in the Europa League without a single point after five games. Their recent form includes a heavy 5-1 home defeat to bitter rivals Marseille.
