Liverpool secured a 1-0 victory over Wrexham at Yankee Stadium in New York on Wednesday, thanks to a deflected strike from substitute Rio Ngumoha in the 75th minute. The goal, which looped off Wrexham defender Lewis Brunt, was the only highlight of a largely uneventful pre-season friendly in front of 42,204 spectators, including Wrexham's Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Travel disruptions and experimental lineup
Liverpool's preparations for the match were far from ideal. Their flight from Chicago was cancelled on Tuesday night due to poor weather conditions in the New York area, delaying their arrival until the day of the game. The team only checked into their Midtown hotel around midday and were scheduled to fly back to Chicago immediately after the match. Head coach Andoni Iraola had to field an experimental side, with key players like Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Ryan Gravenberch not making the trip from Liverpool's training base as they were not yet ready for pre-season action. Joe Gomez was injured, and Federico Chiesa was absent due to illness.
Young talents shine
Six of Liverpool's starting line-up had no Premier League experience, including highly-rated right winger Joshua Abe. The 16-year-old, who committed his future to Liverpool by signing scholarship terms in June, had a chance to open the scoring early in the match when released by Harvey Elliott, but a heavy first touch allowed Wrexham goalkeeper Danny Ward to save. Abe, along with Calum Scanlon, Lewis Koumas, Milos Kerkez, and Trey Nyoni, were replaced at half-time by Ngumoha, Kieran Morrison, Kostas Tsimikas, and Curtis Jones.
Wrexham's physical edge
Wrexham, who are further along in their pre-season preparations with their first competitive match against Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup on the horizon, gained a physical edge as the first half progressed. Sam Smith and Callum Doyle had chances but failed to trouble Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. In the second half, Wrexham substitute Nathan Broadhead forced a save from Mamardashvili with a powerful drive from 25 yards. Lewis Brunt and Kieffer Moore both had late opportunities to equalise but miscued from close range.
Quiet friendly
Despite the presence of Wrexham's Hollywood owners and the iconic baseball stadium setting, the match failed to ignite. Dominik Szoboszlai had a few surging runs from midfield, and Harvey Elliott tested Ward with a first-time shot from 20 yards, but clear-cut chances were few and far between. The victory made it two wins out of two for Iraola on his first pre-season tour as Liverpool head coach.
