Gary Neville Warns Xabi Alonso of Massive Chelsea Challenge After Sunderland Defeat
Neville Warns Alonso of Chelsea Challenge

Gary Neville has issued a stark warning to incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso after the Blues ended a disastrous season with a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The loss meant Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League, failing to qualify for any European competition.

Disastrous Season for Chelsea

The defeat capped a turbulent campaign for Chelsea, who have had three managers this season. Enzo Maresca started the season in charge, followed by Liam Rosenior, who was sacked last month, and interim boss Calum McFarlane, who oversaw the final matches. Alonso was confirmed as Chelsea's next manager last week on a four-year contract, set to take over in July.

Manchester United legend Neville described Alonso's task as 'one hell of a job' on his Sky Sports podcast. 'He's been made the manager, but he may as well have been called manager, sporting director, owner, the lot. It seems like they've given him the keys to the club and asked him to sort it out because Chelsea are struggling. What a disastrous season it's been for them,' Neville said.

Alonso's Previous Roles

Alonso, one of the best players of his generation, impressed in his first managerial role at Bayer Leverkusen, leading them to their first Bundesliga title ahead of Bayern Munich. However, his subsequent stint at Real Madrid ended after just seven months by mutual consent.

Trai Hume gave Sunderland a first-half lead, and Malo Gusto's own goal doubled the advantage after the break. Cole Palmer pulled one back for Chelsea with 35 minutes remaining, but the Blues failed to find an equalizer and finished with 10 men after Wesley Fofana received their eighth red card of the season—twice as many as any other Premier League club.

Interim boss McFarlane expressed disappointment: 'We didn't get the performance we wanted or the result. The message to the fans is that we're as disappointed as they are, and we're gutted we couldn't do it for them. They've been brilliant this year, especially in the past couple of weeks when we needed to win games. We felt their presence, and unfortunately we've let them down.'

While Chelsea ended the season in despair, Sunderland's win lifted them to seventh place, securing qualification for next season's Europa League.
