Jose Mourinho is hoping to reunite with former Manchester United star Scott McTominay at Real Madrid, according to reports. The Special One gave McTominay his senior debut in 2017 and has frequently praised the Scotland international since his move to Napoli in 2024.
McTominay's rise in Italy
The 29-year-old has hit remarkable heights in Serie A, winning the league title and Player of the Year award in his debut season, along with a Ballon d'Or nomination. With 27 goals and 10 assists in 80 appearances, many now consider his sale from United a major mistake.
Wayne Rooney recently urged United to re-sign McTominay, but reports from Italy suggest Real Madrid are leading the chase. Tuttomercatoweb claim Napoli have no intention of selling and have placed an €80 million (£69 million) price tag on their star man.
Contract and sell-on clause
McTominay's stance on a transfer is unclear, though negotiations to extend his contract beyond 2028 have reportedly stalled. United sold him for up to £30 million and would benefit from a 10% sell-on clause if he joins Los Blancos.
Napoli chiefs plan to hold talks with McTominay after the World Cup. The midfielder has faced criticism at the tournament for going missing as Scotland narrowly beat Haiti before losses to Morocco and Brazil.
Scotland's World Cup hopes
Scotland finished third in Group C with three points and a goal difference of -3. Opta gave them a 42% chance of reaching the knockouts after a 3-0 defeat to Brazil, but that has since plummeted to 0.07% as other results have not gone their way.
