Jody Morris has expressed doubts over Maxence Lacroix's ability to succeed at Chelsea after the defender's underwhelming performances at the World Cup. The former Chelsea midfielder, who served as Frank Lampard's assistant from 2018 to 2021, believes the £52 million signing must significantly improve to meet the demands at Stamford Bridge.
Lacroix's move to Chelsea
Lacroix informed Crystal Palace of his desire to leave at the end of last season, and Chelsea quickly moved to secure the 26-year-old. The French centre-back helped Palace win the FA Cup, Europa Conference League, and Community Shield during a trophy-laden two-year spell. Chelsea agreed a fee of around £52 million, with Lacroix expected to sign a six-year contract. He follows Geovany Quenda, Marco Palestra, and British-record signing Morgan Rogers into Xabi Alonso's squad for the 2026/27 campaign.
Morris's World Cup concerns
While Morris praised Lacroix's performances for Palace in a back three, he was unimpressed by his displays for France at the World Cup, particularly in the bronze final defeat to England. 'I thought Lacroix did great for Crystal Palace last year in a back three, but playing for Palace and Chelsea are two different things,' Morris told BOYLE Sports. 'I didn't think he played well for France. He had a very poor game against Spain and I didn't think he was great against England either, where they conceded six goals.' Morris stressed that Lacroix must raise his level in a back four, as he has only played in a three at club level.
Enzo Fernandez's future
Morris also addressed Enzo Fernandez's potential departure, encouraging Chelsea to sell if the midfielder continues to push for a move. Fernandez has repeatedly hinted at a transfer to Real Madrid, leading to a two-match ban in April for comments. Chelsea are reportedly holding out for a £120 million offer. 'If people aren't wanting to pay the money for a player, then he stays,' Morris said. 'Enzo Fernandez is one of the few who would get pass marks last year for Chelsea. But I have always been the same, if someone doesn't want to be at a football club, then let them go.' Morris added that Fernandez's World Cup performance could help Chelsea recoup much of the £107 million they spent in 2023.
