A highly sought-after set of football cards featuring autographs from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has sold for more than £10,000 at a London auction, underscoring the growing value of sports memorabilia. The collection, which includes cards from the 2014-15 season, attracted bidders from around the world.
Record-Breaking Sale at Auction House
The auction, held by Graham Budd Auctions on November 15, 2024, saw the Messi and Ronaldo autographed cards fetch a combined total of £10,560. The Messi card, a Panini Prizm World Cup 2014 edition, sold for £6,240, while the Ronaldo card, from the same set, went for £4,320. Both cards were graded by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) and deemed authentic.
According to auctioneer Graham Budd, the sale reflects a surge in demand for high-quality football memorabilia. “We’ve seen a significant increase in interest from collectors, particularly for items associated with Messi and Ronaldo,” Budd said. “These cards are not just collectibles; they are investments.”
Market Trends in Sports Memorabilia
The sale comes amid a broader boom in the sports memorabilia market, driven by a new generation of investors and the rise of online platforms. A 2023 report by Market Decipher valued the global sports memorabilia market at $26.1 billion, with football trading cards being a key segment. Experts attribute this growth to the scarcity of high-grade autographed cards and the enduring popularity of players like Messi and Ronaldo.
“Autographed cards are particularly valuable because they combine rarity with personal connection,” said sports memorabilia analyst Sarah Johnson. “Fans want a piece of their heroes, and that drives prices up.”
Impact on Collectors and Investors
The auction result has energized collectors, with many now seeking out similar items. Some experts warn, however, that the market can be volatile. “While prices have soared, it’s important for buyers to do their homework and verify authenticity,” Budd advised. The sale also highlights the importance of grading, as certified cards command higher premiums.
For now, the Messi and Ronaldo autograph cards remain a benchmark for the market, with both players continuing to attract global attention. As Budd noted, “These are icons of the sport, and their memorabilia will only become more sought after.”
