Paul Merson Convinced Chelsea Star Has Already Handed in Transfer Request
Paul Merson is firmly convinced that Enzo Fernandez has already informed Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior of his desire to leave the club this summer. The future of the midfielder at Stamford Bridge has been cast into serious doubt following a series of interviews where he notably refused to commit his long-term future to the West London outfit.
Provocative Comments Spark Transfer Speculation
During the recent international break, Fernandez further fueled intense speculation about a potential move to Real Madrid after publicly stating he would 'really like' to live in the Spanish capital. These remarks have prompted Chelsea to take decisive action, with Rosenior confirming on Friday that Fernandez will now be sidelined for the club's next two crucial fixtures against Port Vale and Manchester City.
Interestingly, fellow Chelsea player Marc Cucurella made similarly provocative statements during the break, admitting he would find it difficult to reject a summer transfer to Barcelona. However, the Spain international has, for now, avoided any disciplinary measures from the club.
Merson's Blunt Assessment of the Situation
Rosenior asserted that 'a line was crossed' when Fernandez refused to rule out a move to Real Madrid, but Paul Merson believes the Blues boss has mishandled the entire situation. 'I think more's gone on than that. I think Enzo has sat down with him and told him I want to leave,' Merson told Sky Sports.
'I've seen Cucurella have a meeting with him. But Enzo has gone in and said I want to leave. One thing you have to do as a manager is never chop your nose off to spite your face. Let the fans look after that situation. Not you. The fans will let you know if they are unhappy with Enzo. But play him on the pitch. He is one of Chelsea's best players. It's disappointing as a Chelsea fan, and it's only good news for Man City.'
Agent Backlash Over 'Unfair' Punishment
Rosenior's comments and the subsequent two-match ban have also triggered an angry response from Fernandez's agent, Javier Pastore, who feels his client has been treated unjustly. Pastore told The Athletic: 'The punishment is completely unfair — banning the player for two matches, which moreover are also absolutely crucial for Chelsea because qualification for the Champions League is at stake and he is one of the team's most important players.'
'Alongside others, of course, but he has proven himself this year to be a leader and a key player, the backbone of this Chelsea side. I think it's far too harsh given Chelsea's current situation, and there's no real reason or justification for why he has been banned.'
The escalating drama places Chelsea in a precarious position as they navigate critical matches and mounting transfer rumors surrounding one of their star assets.
