Paul Merson Predicts Arsenal Premier League Title Win After Chelsea vs Man City Clash
Merson: Arsenal to Win Premier League Title This Weekend

Paul Merson Backs Arsenal for Premier League Glory as Title Race Nears Climax

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has made a bold prediction that the Premier League title race will effectively conclude this weekend, with his old club Arsenal poised to secure their first league championship in 22 years. Merson's analysis hinges on two critical fixtures: Arsenal hosting Bournemouth and Chelsea facing Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal's Path to Victory

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side, despite recent setbacks, will move a commanding 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League table if they defeat Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The Gunners have experienced a minor dip in form, suffering back-to-back defeats for the first time this season either side of the international break. These losses included a Carabao Cup final defeat to title rivals Manchester City and an FA Cup exit against Championship side Southampton.

Arsenal's performance in the Champions League against Sporting on Tuesday night was somewhat underwhelming, but they managed to grind out a 1-0 victory thanks to Kai Havertz's injury-time goal. Merson believes this result, coupled with the upcoming fixtures, sets the stage for Arsenal's triumphant return to top form.

'I personally think the Premier League title race will be over this weekend,' Merson told Sportskeeda. 'I'm backing Arsenal to win, which means they go 12 points clear of Manchester City. I don't believe City will beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.'

Chelsea's Role in Title Decider

Merson's prediction relies heavily on Chelsea frustrating Manchester City in their Sunday clash. Despite Chelsea's recent struggles—including back-to-back Premier League defeats and an embarrassing Champions League exit to PSG before the international break—they returned to winning ways with a 7-0 FA Cup victory against League One side Port Vale.

'Chelsea are on a poor run of form at the moment and this is a tough game, but I don't expect them to get beat here,' Merson added. 'Manchester City are drawing too many games in the league and Chelsea away is not an easy fixture for them.'

Merson emphasized that while Arsenal have faced criticism for potential title race nerves, their recent league performance has actually been stronger than Manchester City's over the last five games. 'People are talking a lot about Arsenal bottling the league, but over the last five league games, they have won two points more than City! So I don't think Arsenal are doing that bad, especially with City also dropping points.'

Critical Weekend for Multiple Clubs

The upcoming fixtures represent pivotal moments for several Premier League clubs. For Arsenal, victory against Bournemouth would put them in an almost unassailable position at the top of the table. For Chelsea, the match against Manchester City could define manager Liam Rosenior's future at the club, according to Merson.

'The next two games will define Liam Rosenior's future at Chelsea and I expect Chelsea to give City strong competition in this game,' Merson stated. 'I'm going for a draw here, which essentially means Arsenal to win the league.'

Merson concluded with confidence about Arsenal's prospects: 'I'm predicting a comfortable win for Mikel Arteta's team. Arsenal will be relieved they at least have one trophy in the bag after this weekend.'

Manchester City, under Pep Guardiola, have shown ominous form recently, outclassing Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final last month and thrashing reigning Premier League champions Liverpool 4-0 in the FA Cup. However, Merson believes this formidable run will come to an end at Stamford Bridge, paving the way for Arsenal's long-awaited Premier League triumph.
