McCoist Calls for Saka to Be Benched After Arsenal's Wembley Disappointment
Ally McCoist has publicly advised Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to drop star winger Bukayo Saka in the wake of the Gunners' Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City. This recommendation comes after Arsenal's 2-0 loss at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, which dashed their hopes of securing a first major trophy since 2020.
Arsenal's Cup Final Heartbreak Against Manchester City
Arsenal entered the Carabao Cup final with high expectations, aiming to end their trophy drought and maintain momentum in a potentially historic season. The team started strongly, with Kai Havertz coming closest to scoring in the first half when his effort was denied by Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford.
However, the match turned decisively in the second half as Manchester City dominated proceedings. Nico O'Reilly scored twice within four minutes to secure victory for Pep Guardiola's side, who claimed a record fifth Carabao Cup trophy. This defeat also ended Arsenal's dream of achieving a quadruple this season.
McCoist's Controversial Recommendation for Arteta
Despite Arsenal's overall strong season—leading the Premier League by nine points and remaining in contention for the Champions League and FA Cup—McCoist believes tactical changes are necessary. The former Rangers striker specifically pointed to Saka's recent form as a concern.
"I maybe would drop him," McCoist stated on talkSPORT when asked if Arteta should bench Saka after the international break. "Because I think you've got to pick your strongest team and Madueke deserves the starting position more than most."
McCoist emphasized that while Saka remains a "fantastic player" who will eventually rediscover his best form, a temporary spell out of the starting lineup could benefit both the player and the team. He suggested that former Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, who has been waiting for opportunities, should be given a chance in Saka's position.
Saka's Recent Struggles and Team Implications
Bukayo Saka has been one of Arsenal's most influential players in recent seasons, but his performance levels have dipped noticeably this term. Since early December, the England international has scored just twice, raising questions about his current effectiveness.
Jamie Redknapp echoed concerns about Saka's form following the Carabao Cup final, stating on Sky Sports: "The player that I feel right now that isn't performing to the level that he can is Bukayo Saka. I want to see more from him. He's been a difference-maker for Arsenal for so long, so many times."
Redknapp added that for Arsenal to maintain their Premier League title challenge, they need Saka to return to his game-changing best. He noted that competition for places is increasing, with players like Max Dowman and Noni Madueke providing alternatives on the right wing.
Arsenal's Upcoming Fixtures and Selection Dilemmas
Arteta faces crucial selection decisions as Arsenal prepare for a demanding schedule after the international break. The Gunners will first face Championship side Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals, followed by Premier League action against Bournemouth and the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Sporting.
These matches present Arteta with an opportunity to rotate his squad and potentially implement McCoist's suggestion of giving Saka a brief rest. However, dropping a player of Saka's caliber represents a significant gamble during such a critical phase of the season.
Despite the Carabao Cup disappointment, Arsenal's season remains promising across multiple competitions. How Arteta manages his squad—particularly regarding Saka's role—could prove pivotal in determining whether the Gunners can convert their strong position into tangible silverware.
