Matarazzo's Journey from New Jersey to Real Sociedad's Final

From Mathematics to Football: Matarazzo's Unconventional Path

Real Sociedad's coach Pellegrino Matarazzo has embarked on an extraordinary journey that defies conventional football career paths. The Italian-American manager, who holds a degree in applied mathematics from Columbia University, has led the proud Basque club to their eighth Copa del Rey final, marking their first appearance in the championship match in 39 years.

A Transatlantic Football Odyssey

Matarazzo's story begins in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, where he grew up as the son of Neapolitan immigrants. Despite earning a prestigious degree that could have led to a lucrative career in investment banking, Matarazzo's passion for football proved irresistible. "With the degree, investment banking was the logical step in New York," he recalls, "but I thought: 'Well, OK ... if football doesn't work out.'"

The coach's early football experiences were marked by persistence and determination. After failed trials in Italy, he found his opportunity in Germany, where he played in the third and fourth tiers for clubs including Eintracht Bad Kreuznach, SV Wehen Wiesbaden, and Preussen Münster. Matarazzo describes his playing style with characteristic humility: "As a player I was somewhat wooden. Maybe I didn't have the capacity to see everything."

Coaching Education and Bundesliga Success

Matarazzo's transition to coaching began while he was still playing, completing his badges alongside future Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann. His persistence paid off despite initial rejections: "At the time not many foreigners got places on coaching courses. I was declined the first time but I knew what I was doing was good so I kept pushing."

The American-Italian coach made his mark in German football, taking Stuttgart back to the Bundesliga and leading Hoffenheim to European competition. However, his departure from Hoffenheim was difficult, leading to a year-long wait for the right opportunity. "It was important to wait for the right opportunity," Matarazzo emphasizes. "The next step was decisive so I consciously stayed patient."

The Perfect Fit at Real Sociedad

Matarazzo's patience was rewarded when Real Sociedad came calling in December 2025. The club, struggling with just 17 points from 17 games and sitting dangerously close to relegation, represented exactly the challenge he sought. "La Real were top of my list," he reveals. "My first conversations with La Real were in the fall, and it was clear we shared values and ideas."

The impact was immediate and dramatic. Under Matarazzo's guidance, Real Sociedad not only secured their La Liga status but pushed for a Champions League position while advancing to the Copa del Rey final against Atlético Madrid. The transformation has been particularly meaningful for supporters, who haven't seen their team in a cup final since 1987.

Cultural Connection and Adaptation

What makes Matarazzo's success particularly remarkable is his deep connection to Basque culture and his ability to adapt his coaching style. "If you want to understand a club you need to understand the people," he explains. "The Basque region is so special; even though they don't know where they come from, they're rooted: they have a strong sense of who they are, a unity, culture and language."

Matarazzo's multilingual background—speaking Italian, English, German, and now learning Spanish and Basque—has facilitated this cultural immersion. "If you speak different languages, you're open to different ways of thought," he notes. "Words are thought. Immersing yourself, being open, matters."

Preparing for the Historic Final

As Real Sociedad prepare to face Atlético Madrid in Seville, Matarazzo acknowledges the challenge ahead. "Atlético are a fantastic club with great players, a team with a certain fluidity which makes them difficult to press," he analyzes. "We need to find solutions."

The coach expresses particular admiration for Atlético manager Diego Simeone: "I've followed Simeone as a human being, a character, a personality. I was intrigued by the emotions, the authenticity of his being. That inspires me."

Leadership and Club Identity

Matarazzo credits much of Real Sociedad's success to the club's strong leadership and cultural identity. He highlights captain Mikel Oyarzabal as emblematic of the Basque character: "He leads by example in everything he does and that's the people in the city."

The coach's adaptability has been key to his success in different football cultures. "In the Bundesliga I was 'the mathematician', a tactician; in Spain I've been seen more as an emotional coach, giving positive energy," he observes. "I would say one of my biggest strengths is that ability to adapt. Don't put me in a box."

Reflections on Football's Rewards

When asked about the road not taken—the potentially more lucrative career in finance—Matarazzo expresses no regrets. "What we experience in football; nothing can replace that," he says with evident passion. "The intensity and the emotion of every moment is unbelievable. To celebrate victories and be part of a group with one direction, one goal, is something very, very special."

As Real Sociedad approach their historic Copa del Rey final, Matarazzo's journey from New Jersey mathematician to Basque football hero stands as testament to the power of following one's passion across continents and cultures. The club that once seemed destined for relegation now stands 90 minutes from only their fourth cup in history, guided by a coach who embodies the very adaptability and cultural sensitivity he preaches.
