Manchester United target West Ham's Diouf, confirm Mainoo contract extension
Man Utd target West Ham's Diouf, Mainoo extends contract

Manchester United have identified West Ham United's El Hadji Malick Diouf as a potential summer transfer target as they look to bolster their left-back options. The 21-year-old Senegal international joined West Ham from Slavia Prague for €22 million (£19 million) last summer and has impressed in his debut Premier League season, overcoming a slow start to become a key player for the Hammers.

Diouf's rise at West Ham

Diouf's defensive abilities have improved significantly during the second half of the campaign, while his crossing prowess has added a new dimension to his attacking game. Despite West Ham's precarious position near the relegation zone—just two points above the drop with four games remaining—the club is aware of United's interest. It remains unclear whether West Ham would entertain offers for the promising full-back, but at least one other top Premier League club has also scouted Diouf.

United's midfield priority

Manchester United are expected to focus their initial efforts on strengthening the midfield, with two new signings planned. Names on their shortlist include Atalanta's Éderson, Newcastle's Sandro Tonali, and Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, who is also a target for Manchester City. If funds remain after addressing the midfield, United will then turn their attention to the left flank, where they could sign either a left-winger or a defensive player.

With Patrick Dorgu capable of playing in a more advanced role and potentially competing for a wing spot, the focus may shift to a defender who can provide competition for Luke Shaw. Shaw has enjoyed a solid season but has a history of injuries, and at 30 years old, his workload will need careful management, especially if United qualify for the Champions League. Other left-back options include Tyrell Malacia, who has made only two appearances this season, and right-footed defenders Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot.

Diouf's potential and West Ham's position

Diouf, who is expected to represent Senegal at the World Cup, has significant potential and could be gradually integrated into the United squad. West Ham's negotiating stance will be influenced by their Premier League survival. The club posted losses of £104.2 million for the year ending 31 May 2025 and may need to sell players to improve their financial situation. Crysencio Summerville and Mateus Fernandes are also expected to attract interest from other clubs.

Mainoo signs new contract

In other news, Kobbie Mainoo has signed a new contract with Manchester United that runs until June 2031. The 21-year-old midfielder will earn a basic salary of approximately £120,000 per week. Mainoo regained his place in the starting lineup under interim manager Michael Carrick, who gave him his first league start of the season in a 2-0 victory over Manchester United on 17 January. This came after Mainoo had lost his first-team spot under former head coach Ruben Amorim, who was sacked that month.

Mainoo expressed his delight at the extension, stating: "Manchester United has always been my home – this special club means everything to my family. We can all feel the momentum building inside the club. I am determined to step up and play my role in helping Manchester United to regularly fight for major trophies."

Jason Wilcox, Manchester United's director of football, added: "We are delighted that Kobbie has extended his stay here and have full confidence that he will develop into one of the best players in the world, ready to play a pivotal role in a Manchester United team challenging for the biggest honours."
