Manchester United still retain hope of signing Myles Lewis-Skelly before the transfer window closes next week, according to reports. The Arsenal star's future appeared to have been resolved after Mikel Arteta claimed last week that he was 100% confident the Hale End Academy graduate would remain with his boyhood club.
Reports earlier this month claimed the 19-year-old had been offered to both United and Chelsea by intermediaries, with the Premier League champions in need of raising cash through a high-profile sale. Lewis-Skelly himself has declared he is more than happy to remain at Arsenal, having only signed a new long-term contract 12 months ago.
United's belief in a deal
According to The Sun, however, United believe Lewis-Skelly's future isn't as clearcut as it seems. Sources described as well-placed claim the player's increased responsibility over the last fortnight is only a consequence of Martin Zubimendi's loss of form and the time it is taking to get Mikel Merino back up to speed following his World Cup exploits.
Moreover, Arsenal don't believe any of Lewis-Skelly's suitors are prepared to meet an asking price that is likely to exceed £50m, which has played into their confidence of keeping one of their brightest talents.
United's left-back search
United, meanwhile, are desperate to sign a new left-back after their defensive frailties were exposed in Saturday's shock defeat against Hull. Luke Shaw started in his customary position and although he featured in all 38 Premier League games last season, doubts remain over his durability, especially given United's additional European commitments this term.
United have a long-term interest in Newcastle United's Lewis Hall but were told, in no uncertain terms, that the former Chelsea defender is not for sale. Red Devils legend Peter Schmeichel put it to Matthias Jaissle that his former club are interested in Hall after Sunday's 2-2 draw between Newcastle and Liverpool, but the new Magpies boss responded, saying: 'No chance! No chance!'
Alternative target emerges
Barcelona's Alejandro Balde is, however, emerging as a more realistic target after he was left out of the squad for Sunday's game against Elche. Spanish outlet SPORT claim Barcelona bosses are willing to cash in on Balde for around 45m euros (£38m) as they look to raise funds following another summer of significant spending.
The England international has made a positive start to the new season with eye-catching displays in wins over Manchester City and Coventry City and he has risen to the challenge of the increased competition for places following the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes.
As the transfer window enters its final week, United's pursuit of a left-back remains unresolved, with Lewis-Skelly and Balde both potential options, while Arsenal remain confident of keeping their academy graduate.
