Manchester United have parted ways with head coach Ruben Amorim, bringing a sudden end to his 14-month reign at Old Trafford.
A Sudden Departure After Dramatic Comments
The club confirmed the Portuguese manager's exit on Monday, 5 January 2026, just one day after a remarkable press conference. Amorim stated he had joined the club "to be their manager, not their head coach", highlighting a perceived tension over his role and authority.
His departure follows a 1-1 draw with rivals Leeds United, a result that leaves Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League table. The 40-year-old, who was appointed in November 2024 after leaving Sporting Lisbon, has reportedly already said his goodbyes at the club's Carrington training ground.
Struggles and a Silver Lining
Amorim's time in the dugout was characterised by struggle, despite a notable achievement in European competition. In an official statement, the club acknowledged his contribution, noting he led the team to the UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May 2025.
However, with league form deemed insufficient, the club's leadership felt a change was necessary. "With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club's leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change," the statement read. "This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish."
Fletcher Steps In Immediately
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will assume control of the team on an interim basis. His first match in temporary charge will be the Premier League fixture against Burnley on Wednesday.
The club expressed gratitude to Amorim for his service and wished him well for the future. The search for a permanent successor is now expected to begin, as United aim to salvage their season and secure a coveted top-four finish.
