Muon Facility Under Threat
Muons are subatomic particles used to investigate magnetism, superconductivity, battery materials, and other areas of scientific and societal importance. UK scientists have been at the forefront of developing these techniques, but the unique facility now faces closure due to the cuts, according to Blundell.

AI-Designed Bacteriophages: Promise Over Fear
In a separate letter, Peter Forbes from Muswell Hill, London, responded to a Guardian article about safety fears over AI-designed viruses. He criticized editors for reaching for the "fear" button when something promising for human medicine is in prospect.
Forbes clarified that the viruses in question are bacteriophages, which are natural enemies of bacteria, have been used in medicine for over 100 years, and already combat disease-resistant bacteria. Engineering bacteriophages to create a truly effective treatment for general use has been ongoing in many labs for decades.
He argued that if there is one task AI ought to be employed in above all others, it is this. The letter reflects a broader concern about balanced reporting on scientific advancements, particularly those involving AI.
