Manchester United Legend Advocates for Lampard's Chelsea Comeback
Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has publicly endorsed Frank Lampard for a potential return to the managerial role at Chelsea, asserting that the ex-Blues star would perform an "amazing job" if given another opportunity at Stamford Bridge.
Lampard's Impressive Coventry City Campaign
Frank Lampard is currently orchestrating a remarkable promotion push with Coventry City in the Championship. The Sky Blues command a substantial nine-point lead at the summit of the league table with merely seven fixtures remaining. Under Lampard's guidance, Coventry has exhibited exceptional form, suffering only seven defeats in a fiercely competitive division while netting an impressive 81 goals—14 more than any other team in the Championship.
This tenure represents Lampard's most prosperous managerial spell to date, surpassing his previous experiences at Chelsea, Derby County, and Everton. His tactical acumen and leadership have revitalized Coventry, positioning them strongly for a return to the Premier League.
Historical Context: Lampard's Previous Chelsea Stints
Lampard initially assumed the Chelsea managerial position in 2019, delivering a promising start by securing a fourth-place Premier League finish and guiding the team to the FA Cup final, where they were defeated by Arsenal. The subsequent season began positively, with Chelsea leading their Champions League group and ascending to the top of the Premier League by early December.
However, a downturn in form—winning just two of the next eight matches—resulted in a slide to ninth place, culminating in Lampard's dismissal in January 2021. A challenging period at Everton followed before Lampard returned to Chelsea as caretaker manager during the 2022-23 season following Graham Potter's departure. This interim role proved difficult, with only one victory in eleven matches and Chelsea languishing in the bottom half of the table.
Butt's Rationale for Lampard's Return
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Nicky Butt articulated his support for Lampard's potential reappointment. "He got the job too early the first time I think and he had the transfer embargo so he had to use a lot of young players," Butt remarked. "It wouldn't be a stupid thing to go and get Frank Lampard back in charge of Chelsea for me. He's done a great job at Coventry."
Butt emphasized Lampard's accumulated experience and growth since his initial Chelsea tenure. "He's got a bit more experience now and he probably made a few mistakes the first time around. People need to understand that transfer embargo means you have to rely on loads of young players, that must have been difficult for him," he explained.
The Manchester United icon believes Lampard would thrive with Chelsea's current squad. "He would be a totally different manager now. I think Lampard would find it easier working with better players, it would be easier for him to get his messages across to more technical players," Butt stated. "If Frank went back into Chelsea, with all the experience he's got now, I think he would do an amazing job, I really do."
Chelsea's Current Managerial Situation
Current Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior, appointed in January following Enzo Maresca's exit, faces mounting pressure from supporters. Since his arrival, Chelsea suffered an 8-2 Champions League defeat to PSG and have dropped to sixth in the Premier League, trailing the top four by six points. While the club's hierarchy intends to afford Rosenior additional time to reverse fortunes, Butt's comments introduce Lampard as a compelling alternative should a managerial change become imminent.
Lampard's transformative work at Coventry, combined with his deepened managerial insights, positions him as a credible candidate for a Chelsea return, according to Butt's assessment. The football community now watches closely as both Coventry's promotion bid and Chelsea's season unfold, with potential implications for managerial movements in the coming months.
