Manchester United have joined Chelsea in the race to sign Italy defender Giorgio Scalvini, according to reports. The Red Devils are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of Michael Carrick's first full season in charge, with the 22-year-old Atalanta star emerging as a key target.
United's Transfer Priorities
United have made bolstering their midfield a top priority following the departure of Casemiro, with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans already arriving from Chelsea and Aston Villa, respectively. Additionally, Karl Darlow has joined from Leeds United to provide backup for Senne Lammens, who impressed in his debut season at Old Trafford.
Despite these additions, United are keen to make further signings, particularly in midfield, with Manu Kone and Carlos Baleba among the names under consideration. The club has also explored adding defensive depth, specifically at left-back, to provide competition for Luke Shaw, who started all 38 league games last season.
Scalvini's Profile and Interest
According to The Telegraph, Scalvini is another name under consideration by the United hierarchy. The Red Devils have already scouted the 22-year-old, who has made over 100 appearances for boyhood club Atalanta and helped them win the Europa League in 2024. Scalvini, who can play in a back three, back four, or as a defensive midfielder, is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League.
However, United could face competition to complete a deal, with reports suggesting that both Chelsea and Tottenham are also interested in the Italian. Atalanta are aware of the interest in their player and reportedly want at least £42m to part with the defender, who is under contract until the summer of 2028.
Other Defensive Targets
Elsewhere, United have also explored a deal for Myles Lewis-Skelly, who would provide cover at left-back and central midfield. The Arsenal academy graduate struggled for minutes for large swathes of last season before an impressive run at the end of the campaign, which culminated in him starting the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.
However, with the Gunners close to signing Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis-Skelly could once again find himself in a battle for regular starts. Despite that, it is said that Arsenal would prefer to keep the 19-year-old at the club heading into next season.
