Man Utd in talks for Balde after his Man Utd admission

Manchester United are exploring a deal to sign Barcelona full-back Alejandro Balde, with the 22-year-old having previously suggested he would be open to a move to Old Trafford. United are nearing the end of their midfield rebuild, with talks progressing over a deal to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton for £65 million. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans were recruited in July to give manager Michael Carrick fresh options in the middle of the park.

Left-back search intensifies

A left-back is also on United's shopping list before the summer transfer window closes. Newcastle United's Lewis Hall is their top target, but the Magpies have no intention of selling one of their remaining prized assets after a summer of major upheaval at St James' Park. United are now looking into a deal to sign Balde, holding talks with his agent Jorge Mendes on Thursday.

The Spain international's preference is to stay at the Camp Nou, but Catalan daily Sport claim head coach Hansi Flick has doubts over his long-term role. The arrival of Joao Cancelo on a free transfer could also raise further questions over his game time this season.

Balde's previous admission

While his first-choice option may be to stay at Barcelona, Balde has previously claimed United would be his second-choice club. Balde broke into the first team back in 2022 under club legend Xavi, replacing Jordi Alba in the starting XI. In November that year, he took part in a quick-fire Q&A with Mundo Deportivo on TikTok. Balde was asked, 'A club other than Barcelona?', replying, 'United'.

Balde started 21 games as Barcelona won the Spanish title last season, starting a further 10 in the Champions League and cup competitions. Hamstring and muscle issues saw him miss 10 games through injury.

Other targets and competition

Left-back is an area United wish to strengthen in the next week. Luke Shaw started every game of their Premier League campaign last season, but given his injury history, another option is being sought. United have also identified Racing Santander's Jorge Sanislas as a possible target but face competition from Atletico Madrid. Belgian starlet Joaquin Seys is another target, but Club Brugge are determined not to lose him this summer.
