Manchester United are reportedly ready to abandon their pursuit of Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall and shift their focus to Fulham's Antonee Robinson, according to talkSPORT. The Red Devils have already strengthened their midfield this summer with the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined fee of around £83 million, but they remain determined to close the gap on Arsenal and Manchester City following their end-of-season resurgence under Michael Carrick.
Left-back identified as priority
Left-back has now been identified as the primary area of focus at Old Trafford, with Luke Shaw currently the only senior specialist in that position. Harry Amass, the 19-year-old academy product, is likely to leave on loan again this summer to gain regular first-team minutes, having shone at Sheffield United in the first half of last season but seen his spell at Norwich City cut short by a serious hamstring injury in January.
Hall, 21, who came through Chelsea's academy, has been at the top of United's shortlist after three outstanding years at St James' Park. The England international is believed to be 'keen' on a move to the Theatre of Dreams following Eddie Howe's sudden departure at Newcastle. However, the Magpies have reportedly ruled out a summer deal, deeming Hall an 'untouchable' member of the squad given his age and contract situation.
Robinson emerges as cheaper alternative
According to talkSPORT, this could see United switch their attentions to Fulham's Robinson, 28, as a significantly cheaper plan B after the full-back's impressive World Cup showing with the United States. Robinson has been a stalwart for Fulham over the last six years, following a 2020 move from Wigan Athletic, making a total of 215 appearances in all competitions for the club. His current contract with the Cottagers runs through to June 2028.
Robinson and Hall are not the only left-backs to have been linked with the Red Devils in recent months, with Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly and Racing Santander's Jorge Salinas also understood to be on the club's radar. United bosses are said to be 'very serious' about Salinas in particular, having closely monitored the teenager's performances at this year's Under-19 European Championship. Salinas has a €16 million (£13.7 million) release clause at Racing Santander and is also attracting strong interest from La Liga champions Barcelona.
Patrick Dorgu's role
Patrick Dorgu had initially been brought to United as a left-back in early 2025, but has excelled in a more advanced position under both Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick, further highlighting the need for a natural left-back. The club's determination to strengthen in this area underscores their ambition to build on their recent progress and compete at the highest level.
