Manchester United Renew Pursuit of Bayern Munich Defender Alphonso Davies
Manchester United have reportedly revived their long-standing interest in Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies and could potentially secure a deal this summer if they present the German champions with an appropriate bid, according to emerging reports from Germany. The Red Devils' renewed pursuit comes amid growing concerns about the Canadian international's persistent fitness issues.
Davies' Injury History Raises Questions About Future
The 25-year-old left wing-back first appeared on Manchester United's radar during his breakthrough 2018 season with Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer. At that time, both Chelsea and Liverpool also demonstrated strong interest in the promising young defender, but Davies ultimately chose Bayern Munich, completing a transfer worth approximately £11 million.
Since joining the Bundesliga giants, Davies has made 239 appearances across all competitions, contributing significantly to Bayern's success with 14 trophies including six league titles and the 2020 Champions League victory. However, his career trajectory has been hampered by serious injury setbacks in recent seasons.
A devastating ACL injury in early 2025 forced Davies to miss the second half of last season, and the defender has struggled with multiple fitness concerns since returning from surgery. Having already missed 12 matches for Bayern this campaign, Davies suffered another setback last month when he sustained a hamstring strain during his team's victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Bayern Munich Considering Davies' Future
According to German journalist Christian Falk of Bild, Bayern Munich have been compelled to hold internal discussions regarding Davies' future with the club, given the player's expanding injury history. The Bundesliga champions are reportedly evaluating whether retaining the Canadian international remains strategically sound considering his recurring physical problems.
Falk claims Manchester United have been alerted to this developing situation, having previously been "at the table" last season when Davies' contract situation appeared uncertain at Bayern. Although the defender ultimately extended his agreement with the German club until June 2030, the Red Devils have maintained their interest and are said to be closely monitoring developments surrounding the lightning-fast full-back.
Contract Situation Complicates Potential Transfer
While Davies' contract renewal makes any potential transfer "difficult" according to Falk, the journalist suggests Bayern would be willing to negotiate terms should Manchester United present a "concrete" offer during the summer transfer window. This represents a significant opportunity for United, who have been tracking the player since his emergence in North American soccer.
In a 2020 interview with Daily Mail Sport, Davies reflected on his decision to join Bayern Munich rather than pursue opportunities with Premier League clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea. "I know there were rumours about England," Davies explained. "I know different teams had approached my agents. My full focus at the time was Vancouver and trying to get into the play-offs."
The Canadian international continued: "Behind the scenes, my people were dealing with it so I didn't need to think about it a whole lot. Teams approached my people and they relayed the messages to me. We sat down with Bayern Munich and as soon as I heard them, there was no hesitation that I wanted to join this team. I love playing for this club. Being so young and coming here so early is even more of a motivation."
Recent Injury Setbacks and Recovery Timeline
Davies made his return from his latest hamstring injury as a substitute during Bayern's 6-1 Champions League round-of-16 first-leg victory over Atalanta two weeks ago. However, the comeback proved short-lived as the defender was forced off again after just 25 minutes in Bergamo, visibly emotional about the recurrence.
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany is reportedly hopeful of having Davies available again for the team's trip to Freiburg after the international break on April 4. This recovery timeline will be closely monitored by both Bayern Munich and potential suitors like Manchester United as they assess the defender's long-term fitness prospects.
Manchester United's Broader Defensive Search
Davies is not the only full-back currently linked with Manchester United. The Red Devils are also reportedly showing strong interest in Borussia Dortmund's Julian Ryerson, who has enjoyed an impressive campaign at right-back for the Bundesliga side. On the left flank, Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly and Crystal Palace's Tyrick Mitchell are also being tracked by United scouts as concerns grow about Luke Shaw's ability to maintain consistent fitness without breaking down.
This renewed interest in defensive reinforcements reflects Manchester United's ongoing efforts to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026-2027 season, with particular attention being paid to full-back positions that have been plagued by injury concerns in recent campaigns.
