Manchester United have cancelled their £35 million deal with Atalanta to sign midfielder Ederson after the Brazilian failed his medical, according to Sky Sport Italy. The Premier League club informed Atalanta on Friday that they would not proceed with the transfer following the examination.
Failed medical ends move
United had initially agreed a £35m fee with the Serie A side in June but delayed the full medical until after Brazil's World Cup campaign. The medical reportedly revealed concerns that led to the cancellation.
The decision comes as a blow to United, who had identified Ederson as a key target to strengthen their midfield. The 25-year-old had been expected to provide depth and competition in the centre of the park.
Atalanta informed of decision
Sky Sport Italy reported that United formally notified Atalanta of their decision on Friday, ending weeks of speculation. The Brazilian international had been linked with a move to Old Trafford since early June, with negotiations progressing smoothly until the medical stage.
United's transfer strategy has come under scrutiny, with the club also considering pulling out of another £35m deal after a medical revealed concerns, as previously reported by Metro. The club has made an approach to sign a World Cup star despite an agreement with Arsenal, indicating ongoing activity in the market.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are reportedly interested in re-signing a star Mikel Arteta sold for just £2.7m, highlighting the fluid nature of the transfer window.
