Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly considering summer moves for Real Sociedad winger Ander Barrenetxea, according to Spanish media. The 24-year-old Spain international has been in outstanding form this season, highlighted by his record-breaking goal in the Copa del Rey final.
Rise Through the Ranks
Barrenetxea emerged from Real Sociedad's academy, making his senior debut at just 16 years old in 2018. Since then, he has become a key figure for the Basque club, amassing 233 appearances across all competitions, scoring 28 goals and providing 18 assists. His early breakthrough came in his second season, helping Sociedad win the Copa del Rey, a trophy they reclaimed this year under manager Pellegrino Matarazzo.
Record-Breaking Feat
In last month's Copa del Rey final against Atletico Madrid, Barrenetxea scored after just 14 seconds, the fastest goal in the competition's history. Sociedad went on to win via a penalty shootout. The feat earned him a Guinness World Records certificate, which he posed with alongside teammates.
His performances earned a first Spain call-up in March, and there are calls for him to be included in the World Cup squad this summer. According to Marca, his form has 'not gone unnoticed' and has 'left its mark' on the transfer market.
Interest from Premier League Giants
Both Manchester United and Chelsea have added Barrenetxea to their summer shortlists, with scouts closely monitoring his progress. The report suggests the diminutive forward 'fits the bill' for both clubs' projects as they look to strengthen ahead of the new season.
Real Sociedad have a history of selling star players for big fees, with Alexander Isak, Mikel Merino, and Martin Zubimendi all departing in recent years. Barrenetxea's current contract runs until June 2030, but a move could be on the cards.
Sociedad currently sit eighth in La Liga with three games remaining, starting with a trip to Girona. Their Copa del Rey win secured Europa League qualification.
