Blockx Upsets Ruud in Madrid
Belgian qualifier Alexander Blockx delivered a stunning performance at the Madrid Open on Tuesday, defeating world number 6 Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. The 19-year-old, ranked 112th, broke Ruud's serve three times and saved all four break points he faced, completing the match in just 72 minutes.
Blockx, who came through three qualifying rounds to reach the main draw, showcased aggressive baseline play and precise shot-making that left the Norwegian struggling to find rhythm. This victory marks his first career win over a top-10 opponent.
Andreeva Battles Back
In the women's draw, 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva rallied from a set down to defeat Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. The young Russian, seeded 15th, demonstrated remarkable composure as she turned the match around with deep returns and consistent groundstrokes.
Andreeva will next face Czech Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, in what promises to be a compelling third-round clash.
