Frank Lampard has expressed interest in signing a second Chelsea player for Coventry City after making an approach for Mykhailo Mudryk. According to talkSPORT, Lampard is also keen to discuss a possible deal for Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong.
Coventry City are preparing for their return to the Premier League after winning the Championship title last season. Their opening fixture is against Premier League champions Arsenal. The Sky Blues have already signed Caleb Yirenkyi, Carl Rushworth, Lous Tchauouna, Aurele Amenda, Gustavo Hamer, Frank Onyenka, and Normal Bassette this summer.
Lampard's Interest in Mudryk
Lampard has informed Chelsea of his interest in Mudryk, who recently returned to training after resolving a doping case with the Football Association. The Ukraine international had been provisionally suspended since November 2024 after returning an 'adverse finding' for the banned substance meldonium. The FA ended its anti-doping proceedings after Mudryk accepted breaching anti-doping rules and agreed to a suspension equal to the one year and eight months already served.
New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said he was 'very happy' to welcome Mudryk back into his squad but that it was 'too early' to determine his performance levels. A loan move seems likely to give Mudryk regular minutes and a chance to regain the form that earned him a £62m move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea's sister club Strasbourg are interested, but Fabrizio Romano has reported that Mudryk would prefer to remain in the Premier League if a loan becomes necessary.
Acheampong on Coventry's Radar
Josh Acheampong, a 20-year-old academy graduate, has made 44 appearances for Chelsea since his debut in 2024, including 30 last season. He is considered one of the most highly-rated young defenders in Europe and is deemed 'untouchable' by Chelsea bosses. However, Chelsea may see the benefit of the youngster spending a season under club legend Lampard.
talkSPORT's Alex Crook said: 'Keep an eye on Josh Acheampong. He's a player that Frank Lampard would like to take to Coventry. And as we get towards the end of this window, there is a possibility that Chelsea might be willing to do that deal as well.'
Chelsea's Defensive Overhaul
Chelsea have already signed Maxence Lacroix in a £52m deal from Crystal Palace, and Alonso has suggested the club could offload multiple centre-backs. Trevor Chalobah has departed to join Cesc Fabregas at Italian side Como. Chelsea beat Real Sociedad 3-1 in their final pre-season friendly and begin their Premier League campaign against Fulham.
Coventry's summer business is not yet complete, with Lampard eager to add more players before the transfer window closes. The club's return to the top flight represents a significant step, and securing a player of Acheampong's potential would further strengthen their squad for the challenges ahead.
