Martin Keown Blasts Arsenal Stars for Failing to Pass to Max Dowman in Crushing Defeat
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has launched a scathing critique of the current Gunners squad, accusing them of neglecting young teammate Max Dowman during a devastating 2-1 home loss to Bournemouth. The defeat, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, severely dents Arsenal's Premier League title aspirations, allowing Manchester City to edge closer in the race.
A Missed Opportunity to Extend Lead
Arsenal entered the match with a golden chance to move twelve points clear at the summit of the Premier League, tightening their grip on the championship in front of their home supporters. However, an insipid and lackluster display resulted in their third loss in the last four matches, with Bournemouth securing a memorable victory.
The visitors struck early through Junior Kroupi, but Viktor Gyokeres leveled the score after thirty-five minutes, briefly offering hope. Despite this equalizer, Arsenal failed to spark into life, showing little improvement as the game progressed.
Arteta's Changes Prove Ineffective
Frustrated by his team's performance, manager Mikel Arteta made three substitutions just nine minutes into the second half, bringing on Eberechi Eze, Leandro Trossard, and Max Dowman to replace Gabriel Martintelli, Kai Havertz, and Noni Madueke. Unfortunately, these tactical adjustments had minimal impact, with Arsenal continuing to labor and struggle creatively.
The Gunners were punished again in the seventy-fourth minute, failing to deal with three second-ball situations before Alex Scott delivered a fine finish to beat goalkeeper David Raya, sealing Bournemouth's win.
Keown's Frustration Over Dowman's Underuse
Despite only turning sixteen in December, Max Dowman has seamlessly integrated into Arsenal's first-team squad, showcasing his talent off the bench. In the previous Premier League match against Everton, he was instrumental, assisting one goal and scoring another in a dramatic 2-0 victory.
However, he could not replicate that impact against Bournemouth, with Keown expressing clear frustration that Arsenal players did not look for their young teammate more often during the match.
'Arsenal fixed the play and the picture never changed,' Keown told TNT Sports. 'Arsenal then couldn't develop the play into their midfield players. Even when Dowman came on, we were all screaming give him the ball, but they didn't have enough good control of the ball in the midfield and that is all down to Bournemouth and Arsenal not mixing up their game enough.'
Title Race Implications and City's Advantage
This defeat has significant consequences for the Premier League title race. Manchester City face a challenging away test against Chelsea on Sunday, but if they emerge victorious, they can reduce the gap at the top to just three points when they play Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium next weekend.
Additionally, City will hold a game in hand over their rivals, putting Arsenal under immense pressure to rebound quickly from this setback. The Gunners' inability to utilize key players like Dowman in critical moments could prove costly as the season reaches its climax.
