Jimmy White has dismissed critics of the World Seniors Snooker Championship being held at the Crucible Theatre, telling them to 'get a life'. The event began on Wednesday night at the iconic Sheffield venue, just two days after Wu Yize won the World Snooker Championship there.
Gilbert's Criticism
World number 31 Dave Gilbert, known as 'The Angry Farmer', expressed strong disapproval, calling the decision a 'travesty'. He argued that only top 16 professionals or qualifiers should play at the Crucible, describing it as the 'Mecca of snooker'. Gilbert stated, 'It's a special place. It's a travesty for any professional that doesn't get to play there. I hate that they play the Seniors there. The only people that should play at the Crucible are people that go through this qualifying school or a top 16 professional. It's not for hacking around in exhibitions.'
White's Response
White, who has won the World Seniors Championship four times, had no sympathy for Gilbert's viewpoint. He told Metro, 'Get a life! Listen, this is why we're here. Why not? It's a World Championship, the World Seniors. I don't know why people would say that. It don't make any sense.'
Doherty's Balanced View
Ken Doherty, a two-time Seniors finalist, understands Gilbert's concerns but supports the event at the Crucible. He noted that it allows fans who cannot afford or access World Championship tickets to experience the theatre. 'I know what he means, but listen, why not? I know it's the home of the World Championship, but it can be the home of the World Seniors Championship as well. It's a special event, so why not?' said Doherty.
White's Seniors Campaign
White opened his Seniors campaign with a win over Daniel Ward on Thursday afternoon. Ahead of the match, he expressed excitement about returning to the Crucible: 'I'm absolutely buzzing. This is why you play. The Seniors is a big event for us because the winner gets in the Champion of Champions. Also, you're playing in the Crucible Theatre. I'm so lucky to still be playing.'
The World Seniors Championship has been held at the Crucible since 2019, offering former and aspiring players a chance to compete at the iconic venue.
