Eddie Howe Dismisses Arsenal's Deadline Day Move for Newcastle's Sandro Tonali
Howe Rejects Arsenal's Tonali Transfer Rumours

Newcastle Boss Eddie Howe Issues Strong Rebuttal to Arsenal's Reported Interest in Sandro Tonali

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has delivered a resolute message, firmly dismissing speculation linking midfielder Sandro Tonali with a deadline day move to Premier League rivals Arsenal. The Italian international was reportedly targeted by the Gunners as they sought cover for the injured Mikel Merino, but Newcastle swiftly rejected any notion of a transfer.

Howe's Defiant Stance on Tonali's Future

Speaking ahead of Newcastle's pivotal Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City, Howe was unequivocal about Tonali's status. "There was no intention for our side to lose Sandro at all," he stated. "He's such an integral part of what we're doing. He's very happy here, he loves playing for Newcastle and loves representing the city."

Howe addressed concerns that the rumours might mirror the situation with Alexander Isak, who left for Liverpool last summer amid acrimony. "I don't think so," he responded, though he acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football. "But lots of things happen without my knowledge. As far as I'm aware, we've got a player that's an outstanding footballer and an outstanding person."

Tonali's Focus Amid Transfer Speculation

The manager emphasised Tonali's commitment and mindset, particularly with Newcastle facing a two-goal deficit against Manchester City. "He's absolutely fine," Howe revealed. "I had discussions with Sandro yesterday, he's absolutely focused on the here, the now, playing for us. His only focus talking to him was on Manchester City and trying to win that game."

Howe added that Tonali remains "happy and committed" to the club, dismissing any internal issues. "I find it difficult to talk about things I don't know about," he said. "I can only talk about Sandro the person and the player and his mindset here and now, and he's absolutely fine."

The Reality of Top-Level Football

Reflecting on the broader context, Howe acknowledged that Newcastle's best players will always attract attention. "Our best players are always going to be attracting glances from other clubs, that's just the reality of football," he noted. "We want to keep the group together and keep being progressive. Sandro plays a part in that, trying to hit his best levels and trying to help the team."

Newcastle's Belief Ahead of Manchester City Clash

Turning to the upcoming match, Howe expressed confidence in his squad's ability to overcome the odds. "We very much have to have that belief," he asserted, referencing the late second goal conceded in the first leg. "I believe we have got the players that can go to any stadium in the world and perform and score goals. I think collectively the spirit within the group is there."

He described the challenge as "almighty," but remained optimistic. "There is no bigger challenge than Manchester City away. I think we say that every time we play them, but we believe in ourselves and are going to give it a good go."

This strong stance from Howe underscores Newcastle's determination to retain key assets like Tonali as they aim for success both on and off the pitch, starting with a crucial cup tie against one of Europe's top sides.
