Glenn Hoddle Backs Liam Rosenior to Stay as Chelsea Manager Despite Recent Struggles
Former Chelsea manager Glenn Hoddle has made a bold prediction regarding the future of current boss Liam Rosenior, claiming the club will not dismiss him despite a string of disappointing results. This comes after Chelsea suffered their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat, falling 1-0 to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night.
Chelsea's Current Position and Pressure on Rosenior
The loss leaves Chelsea in sixth place in the Premier League standings, with the potential to trail fifth-placed Liverpool by seven points if Liverpool secures a victory in the Merseyside derby against Everton on Sunday. Rosenior, who took over from Enzo Maresca in January, is already facing mounting pressure from some sections of the Chelsea fanbase, with calls for his sacking growing louder amid the team's poor form.
Hoddle's Analysis and Support for Rosenior
In an interview with Premier League Productions, Hoddle expressed his belief that Chelsea's hierarchy will maintain faith in Rosenior through the summer and into the start of the next season. He emphasized, however, that Rosenior must deliver improved performances to secure his long-term position.
'They're in a really sticky position,' Hoddle stated. 'For me, for Liam to stay in that job now until the end of the season, I think they'll give him that opportunity, but he's got to finish on a high note. He's got to get some wins under his belt.'
Hoddle highlighted that Rosenior was appointed as part of a broader project at Chelsea, noting his youth and potential. 'The reason they brought him in is he's a young manager, he's part of their project, and I think they'll give him that chance,' he explained. 'But he's going to have to start winning. Even if he doesn't get into the Champions League, they're in the FA Cup semi-final, so they could actually win a trophy still.'
Future Expectations and Potential Consequences
Looking ahead, Hoddle warned that Rosenior's tenure could become precarious if Chelsea fails to start the next season positively. 'I think they'll stay with him and give him a pre-season, and I think they'll start with him, but he's going to have to start next season in a positive way. If not, I think then he could be on a bit of dodgy ground,' he cautioned.
Rosenior's Post-Match Comments and Uncertainty
Following the defeat to Manchester United, Rosenior addressed the media, expressing uncertainty about the implications of potentially missing out on Champions League qualification for the upcoming season. 'The honest answer is I don't know. The honest answer is we're still fighting, and we'll address that situation at the end of the season, whatever the situation is,' he said.
Reflecting on the match, Rosenior admitted frustration despite some positive aspects of Chelsea's performance. 'In terms of the game tonight, it's a really, really difficult one to take because people don't want to hear me say how well we played and didn't win the game. We're here to win,' he remarked. 'There are many elements, actually, that the process of underlying things that we're looking into suggest that if you stay in this process, we will win games of football. It doesn't look like it at the moment, but the reality is Manchester United have come in, had one shot, won a goal against 10 men, and won a game 1-0, which should be pretty much impossible.'
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Chelsea's management decisions and Rosenior's ability to turn the team's fortunes around, with Hoddle's insights adding to the ongoing debate about the club's future direction.
