Manchester United have been told they can end their 13-year Premier League title drought by making Enzo Fernandez the £120m centrepiece of Michael Carrick's midfield rebuild, according to former England striker Emile Heskey.
Heskey, who won the League Cup with Leicester and Liverpool during his playing days, believes the Chelsea midfielder would provide the missing presence left by Casemiro's departure. The call comes as United gear up for what many at Old Trafford hope will be a first genuine title challenge in more than a decade.
Carrick's impact and the need for investment
United looked destined to miss out on Champions League qualification last season until Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim and steered the club to a third-place finish. That late surge transformed the mood around the club, but Carrick has repeatedly stressed to the board that more work is needed.
With Casemiro having left at the end of the campaign and Manuel Ugarte facing a serious injury lay-off, the midfield is the area causing most concern. United have already spent approximately £85m to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea, yet Carrick wants further reinforcements.
Fernandez's Chelsea exit and £120m price tag
Enzo Fernandez has made no secret of his desire to leave Stamford Bridge this summer. The Argentina international, who helped his country reach the World Cup final before being sent off in the defeat to Spain, has been heavily linked with Real Madrid. However, Chelsea's enormous £120m asking price has made that move increasingly remote, despite Jose Mourinho publicly endorsing the transfer.
Few clubs have shown a willingness to meet Chelsea's valuation, but Heskey believes United should act decisively. He thinks Fernandez would not only replace Casemiro but also elevate the entire team.
Heskey: Fernandez can be the missing piece
"Midfield is an area that Manchester United can definitely improve, and Enzo Fernandez would help," Heskey told BoyleSports. "With Casemiro leaving earlier in the summer, they need to replace that presence. He had a very good end to the season and will be missed."
Heskey added: "I think Enzo Fernandez could be the one to come in and replace him. And if they get him, I can see them as title challengers."
The former England international pointed to a systemic problem at United in recent years, arguing that the squad has always contained enough talent but has been let down by tactical setups that do not suit the players.
System is key to a title push
"They've always had the players, Manchester United, but the systems played by previous managers haven't always suited them," Heskey explained. "If they get the system right, there's no reason they shouldn't be challenging Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool for the title."
United have not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013. They finished last season behind local rivals Manchester City and champions Arsenal, underlining the scale of the challenge facing Carrick. Yet Heskey's confidence reflects the growing belief within the fanbase that a properly coached and reinforced United side can compete again.
Other midfield targets and a left-back search
Fernandez is not the only midfielder on United's radar. Bournemouth's Alex Scott, Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, Brighton's Carlos Baleba and France World Cup star Manu Kone have all been linked with moves to Old Trafford.
However, none of those options carry the same pedigree as Fernandez, who has performed on the biggest stage at international level. His signing would be a statement of intent from the club's hierarchy.
While the midfield remains the priority, Carrick is also looking to strengthen at left-back. Luke Shaw's ongoing injury problems have created a need for cover and competition, with Newcastle's Lewis Hall emerging as the preferred target. Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly is also admired by the club's recruitment team.
What lies ahead for United
Manchester United begin their Premier League campaign on August 22 with a home fixture against newly-promoted Hull City. It will be the first chance for supporters to see whether Carrick's side have made the progress needed to challenge at the summit.
If Heskey is right, and if United manage to secure Fernandez's signature, they could surprise many and reignite memories of the Ferguson era. For now, the ball remains in the court of United's owners and their willingness to sanction another significant outlay.
