Jude Bellingham admitted last week that England's Euro 2024 campaign suffered from a lack of connection off the pitch. Speaking on the Lions' Den sofa, the 22-year-old said: "It didn't feel like there was any kind of hierarchy. I think at the Euros we got some things a little bit wrong off the pitch. I don't feel like the group connected as well as it could have – for a number of reasons."
Southgate's Mistake
Southgate's decision to drop Henderson for Euro 2024 is now seen as a fatal flaw. England struggled without his leadership, and Bellingham's petulance crept in without a senior pro to guide him. Henderson, who is extremely protective of Bellingham, was missed.
Tuchel's Solution
Tuchel spent time understanding why England played with little identity. He concluded that creating the right atmosphere off the pitch would be easier with Henderson around. The Brentford midfielder, who turns 36 on Wednesday, is not a starter but is respected by teammates.
Henderson's Role
Bellingham and Morgan Rogers called Henderson the best person they have ever met in football. Henderson defended Bellingham and praised Declan Rice, England's new vice-captain. "It's important to make sure the culture off the pitch is good," Henderson said.
