Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink Emerges as Shock Contender for Middlesbrough Manager
Hasselbaink Linked with Middlesbrough Managerial Return

Middlesbrough's search for a new manager has taken an unexpected turn with former fan favourite Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink emerging as a potential candidate for the Riverside Stadium hotseat.

Shock Name Enters Boro Frame

The Championship club have been seeking a new leader since Rob Edwards departed for Premier League side Wolves, leaving behind a team sitting second in the division and firmly in promotion contention. While high-profile names like Gary O'Neil and Steven Gerrard had been considered frontrunners, transfer specialist Alan Nixon revealed on Thursday that Hasselbaink's name has been floated by Boro owner Steve Gibson.

The 53-year-old Dutchman hasn't managed since his 2022 stint at Burton Albion but boasts previous experience with QPR and Northampton Town. Nixon's report suggests Hasselbaink could potentially return to the club on a short-term deal until the end of the current season.

Familiar Territory for Former Striker

Hasselbaink needs no introduction to Middlesbrough supporters, having enjoyed a successful playing spell at the Riverside. The powerful striker made 89 appearances for Boro between 2004 and 2006, famously helping the club reach the 2006 UEFA Cup final where they finished as runners-up.

His career highlights include a prolific four-year spell at Chelsea where he made 177 appearances, winning the Charity Shield in 2000 and reaching the FA Cup final two years later. Later in his career, he spent the 2006/07 season with Charlton Athletic, memorably scoring against his former club Chelsea despite managing just four goals in 29 outings.

Southgate Backing and Managerial History

Adding significant weight to his potential candidacy, Nixon's report indicates that Hasselbaink would receive endorsement from Gareth Southgate. The former Middlesbrough manager and current England boss worked with Hasselbaink as part of the national team setup and would reportedly support his appointment.

Hasselbaink's managerial record includes a stint at QPR from December 2015 to November 2016, where he won 13 of his 47 matches before being dismissed with the team in 17th position. Following his departure from Loftus Road, he reflected: "Managing Queens Park Rangers was a true privilege and a big opportunity for me as a coach. Whilst I am extremely disappointed that my time as manager of QPR has come to an end, as I still believe we were on course to achieve our targets, I am grateful for the opportunity."

As Middlesbrough continue their search for Edwards' successor, the potential return of a club legend presents an intriguing option for the promotion-chasing Championship side.
