Guardiola Won't Block Rodri's Potential Real Madrid Move from Manchester City
Pep Guardiola has made it clear that he will not stand in the way of Rodri if the Manchester City midfielder decides to pursue a transfer to Real Madrid. The manager emphasized that the club's policy allows any player who is unhappy to leave, though he expressed strong confidence that Rodri will remain with City beyond this summer.
Rodri's Comments Spark Transfer Speculation
During the recent international break, Rodri addressed rumors linking him with a move to Real Madrid, acknowledging that turning down the world's best clubs is difficult. The 29-year-old Spanish international, whose contract with Manchester City runs until June 2027, referenced former Atlético Madrid players who have made similar moves, stating, "For me, you can't turn down the best clubs in the world."
Guardiola was reminded of his longstanding stance that no player is forced to stay at City against their will. He confirmed this applies to Rodri, saying, "Absolutely. The organisation of the club is above all of us – if one player is not happy, they have to leave." He added that if Rodri is content, he should continue, but if not, the club would accept a suitable offer for his exceptional talent.
Guardiola's Confidence in Rodri's Future
When asked about Rodri signing a new contract and staying next season, Guardiola revealed that the club's desire is for him to remain. "I know what the club wants," he said. "They informed me what they want from Rodri – it is to stay, stay, stay. I think [he will]." Despite the uncertainty, Guardiola maintains a positive outlook, noting Rodri's strong attachment to City and his recent improved form.
Guardiola also addressed comparisons to Chelsea's Enzo Fernández, who was dropped after commenting on Madrid. He stated that he would not speak to Rodri about his remarks, as each club handles such matters differently. "No, what Chelsea has done is Chelsea's [business]," Guardiola explained. "There is no one player that will turn around regarding the chance to play for Madrid [and turn it down]."
Guardiola's Own Future and FA Cup Ambitions
Guardiola's contract with Manchester City also expires in 2027, and there is speculation about whether he will be at the helm next season. When questioned if club executives have sought clarity on his plans, he responded, "I spoke about that in the past many, many times," without providing further details.
Looking ahead, Guardiola is focused on City's FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool, aiming to lead the team to a historic fourth consecutive final. He expressed immense pride in the club's achievements, including seven consecutive FA Cup semi-finals and multiple Premier League titles. "I'm sorry, I'm so proud," he said, reflecting on the team's success.
Phil Foden's Form and World Cup Considerations
Guardiola also commented on Phil Foden's recent struggles, noting that the playmaker has been dropped due to form issues and faced challenges during England's international matches. When asked if missing the World Cup might benefit Foden by allowing rest, Guardiola disagreed, emphasizing the importance of seizing such opportunities. "I'm pretty sure he would love to go with England," he said. "These opportunities cannot be missed."
Overall, while Guardiola respects Rodri's potential interest in Real Madrid, he remains hopeful that the midfielder will choose to stay at Manchester City, contributing to the club's ongoing success in domestic and European competitions.
