Paul Magnier claimed victory in the opening stage of the 2026 Giro d'Italia on Friday, emerging from a chaotic bunch sprint that was marred by a late crash, leaving most of the peloton out of contention.
The French rider edged out Tobias Lund Andresen in a frantic finish after 147 kilometers of predominantly flat racing from Nessebar to Burgas, the first of three stages in Bulgaria. Magnier was among a select group of riders who avoided a pile-up just 600 meters from the line, while the remainder of the field crossed the finish knowing they would not incur time penalties due to the crash's proximity to the end.
Crash Affects Main Contenders
The overall favorite, Jonas Vingegaard, who sported one fingernail painted red in support of a children's welfare charity, was among those delayed by the incident in the main bunch. The crash disrupted the rhythm of the peloton, but race officials confirmed no time losses would be applied.
Stage Two Preview
Stage two on Saturday presents a more challenging 221-kilometer hilly route from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo, which could shake up the general classification. Riders will need to navigate undulating terrain as the race moves deeper into Bulgaria.
