Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson has delivered a scathing assessment of Alejandro Garnacho's capabilities, bluntly stating that the Chelsea forward demonstrated he is "not good enough to be a regular starter" during the Blues' 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday. The critical comments come after a match where Garnacho, facing his former club for the first time since a £40 million summer move, failed to make a significant impact at Stamford Bridge.
A Costly Defeat and a Questionable Performance
Chelsea's loss, sealed by a Matheus Cunha goal just before halftime, was compounded by an early injury to Estevao, which forced Garnacho into the action in the first half. The 21-year-old Argentine, who has managed only one Premier League goal this season, struggled notably against Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot. Robinson, speaking to Stadium Astro, did not mince words when analyzing Garnacho's display against his old team.
Robinson's Harsh Verdict on Garnacho's Game
"That he's not good enough to be a regular starter for Chelsea and Manchester United may have done some good business," Robinson declared. He expressed initial surprise at United's decision to sell Garnacho last summer, recalling that the player was their most creative force statistically in his final season, contributing goals and assists. However, Robinson suggested that United's management saw flaws that were evident in this match.
"He was supposed to be a game changer off the bench, obviously not that early on in the game, but for me, he runs down dead ends too many times," Robinson explained. "He gets the ball and immediately his head's down and he's gone. He's very, very one-dimensional in the way that he attacks. Yes, he's an attacking threat, but he's quite easy to defend against."
Predictability and a Lack of Adaptation
Robinson elaborated that Garnacho's style makes him a predictable opponent for defenders. "As a full-back, surely you'd like to defend against him because he's quite predictable," he noted. The former goalkeeper emphasized that this issue is coachable, but requires willingness from the player to adapt. "It's like anything in life, if you keep doing the same thing and it's not working, what do you do? You change it. He kept doing the same thing tonight and he didn't change it. It was either a blind run at his full-back, which was so predictable, or he turns, rotates, and keeps possession into the middle of the field."
The defeat leaves Chelsea reflecting on a missed opportunity, while Manchester United edges closer to Champions League qualification. Garnacho's performance, under the microscope after his high-profile transfer, now faces intense scrutiny from pundits and fans alike, raising questions about his future role at the club.
